Walls, siege weapons, and repair projects

Postby Mr. Black » Thu Nov 13, 2008 5:47 pm

First of all, I think that there should be a new sort of building called a wall. The simplest would be made out of wood, while the better and richer towns would have a stone wall, which would be able to take more damage. This wall would surround the buildings of the town it was built and create an outside area of the town, where the animals and some resources, like wood, would be, and an inside, where there would be whatever buildings that have been built there, and the rest of the resources. No animals though, as usually people wouldn't want wild animals in their town. There would be a gatehouse, which you could push notes and resources under, so as to create a kind of toll for the gate to be opened. Also, you could have towers on the wall, from which the gatekeeper could see all around the outside of the town and so, only let in those who seemed all right.

Second of all, I would like to propose siege weapons to combat these walls. These would be things like Siege towers, ballistae, and trebuchets. These things would be very expensive to make, using ungodly amounts of wood, iron, steel, etc. However, they are just like vehicles, and can hold a lot more people than the common van. These would be able to attack the walls and damage them, a lot like attacking a person.

Third and last of all, repair projects. It's quite annoying to register your participation on every repair project you create. In my personal opinion, this should be changed. But whatever.

Got to come out with the same old mantra... they've all been suggested before.
Please try to do a search first to avoid swamping the forum for duplicates.
(You'll find most things have been suggested, I'm afraid.)

As much as people hate people bringing out old ideas, I think this should be encouraged. It sparks interest in the game. Yes while it may be annoying hearing some people suggest a similar idea, if a person brings the subject up again, let's have the debate again.

Hmm... I have a good idea to make a bar chart of each suggestion to show how many times it has been suggested by different people. This could then be shown to the ProgD as a priority list of sorts.

Of course, I wouldn't do it manually :P. Statistics are what computers are best at.

it would be a great idea I think. All the food and transportattion is outside the wall and everthing else is inside so thos who are caught outside in a seige are shit out of luck. the game needs a little more depth when it comes to fighting towns it's to easy you ride in and kill you dont even need to get out of your ship or car most times.

We definitely have to do something to make towns have more defensive capabilities. Attackers have all of the advantages right now. A group of 7 or so active individuals can ride into a town without warning and wipe out a town with a population around 10 before the towns people even know they are being attacked. There are so many advantages to being an attacker right now and I think a big reason why we don't see so many large towns any more is because towns are so easily wiped out.

People could be safe if they stayed behind locked doors but when so much of the game relies on resource gathering, courtyards and other fenced areas would be welcome. And not just to defend against pirates but animals as well.

It would be good if the person setting up the building project could decide how many resource gathering slots go inside the walls and the amount of material and time needed would be multiplied by that. I see a problem though - let's say there are 8 resource slots in town, and a builder reserves 4 of them for a private field. The fencing project isn't finished. Then another builder reserves 5 slots and after this both projects are finished. Now there is -1 slots outside the walls and 4+5 inside the walls. Maybe it could be done so that when the project is finished, if there aren't enough resource slots left to fill the initial reservation, it will take the ones that are left and the leftover building materials will end up on the ground. It should also be possible to knock down the walls completely and resource slots would be added to the main area of the town.
