Server problems

Postby Jos Elkink » Fri Mar 06, 2009 6:55 am

As you can see, the forum is back up. We moved the forum to a different server from the main game, however, which was the plan for a long time already, so the game server itself is still completely down. I'm expected to have it up and running sometime next week, when I have more time to carefully reconfigure it. It requires a complete reconfiguration from scratch, so bare with me. At least we have all backups secure.

I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused because of the downtime!

It is a bit of an experiment to see if this is a good host for our forum - so we'll see how it goes in the near future.

Parts of the forum could always be removed that are unnecessary should performance be slower (for example non-cantr and games sections). It's not as if there aren't another billion forums on the internet to do it on.

Thank you Jos :) Life without Cantr is really sad... ;)

People have problems to access forums, maybe you should make redirect from cantr.net/forum or - better - from main Cantr page?

Yes, I will certainly do that, but can of course only do that when the cantr.net server is up and running again, which is not yet the case ... making progress, though.

Having the forum on the same server as the game probably slowed down the server significantly. We'll see if this helps any.

Yaay...now we can come on here and complain if/when the game crashes on the new server (always thought it was a cunning plan to make them cut out at the same time :P)

horay! i thought it was gone forever!

Postby Taralyn » Sun Mar 08, 2009 12:50 am

After a couple of months with my own computer out of action I returned to CANTR only to get an error message! I was horrified and tried to google what was going on. After no luck I assumed that the unthinkable had happened and the CANTR world wa no longer!
I am much relieved to find that this is only a temporary sleep for all the charries in the CANTR world.

Yes, this was the most frustrating part - at some point I did not even know how to warn people.

And then when I finally did, I forgot to add a date, so you could not determine how long it had been offline ...

The same thing happened to me! After a year without Cantr, I returned yesterday and I thought it was closed down, but thankfully it wasn't. I'll wait till it gets up again, then I'll create a new account.

Thanks Jos and other people directly dealing with this problem!

BUT...

Every self-respected admin would never allow his system to be down as long as cantr server is down right now :) I understand - there were problems. At the same time there was no disaster recovery plan in place. Weird...

Ok. I understand, finance are involved here. But this is not an answer to problems.

Once you built a system and people use it, you have to make sure that if the system goes down it will be down not longer then XX hours/days. It is a bit ridiculous what is going on right now.

How about you come up with this disaster recovery plan feet?
