What is a successful character?
I'm curious to know your opinions. What, in your mind, is a successful character?
Mine is someone who becomes a great adventurer, writer, politician, etc. Basically any character who leaves a lasting mark on Cantr society.

A successful character is a character that is/was fun to play. Well, from the point of view of the player, anyway.
And from the point of view of other players: a successful character is a character that is/was fun to play/interact with.
In my view it is experiencing the journey that matters, not reaching the end.

Yeah, I'm going with this, sums up my opinion pretty well.
Of course these kind of chars do pretty often make a mark on Cantr society like Black said, but not always. if they live in a isolated location or something, they might only make life more interesting for a few people, but I don't think that makes them any less successful...I"ve had really interesting ones that lived in a town with like four people, so a lot depends on how active/interesting the chars around you are to.
Of course my personal definition of fun is making things happen...that's why I wind up with a lot of leaders and second-in-commands probably, and sometimes I like stirring up trouble too...not in a cliched 'raar i'm a psycho!' kind of way though because I don't enjoy that and always feel like killing active chars for no reason is bad for the game, but just to give people something interesting to RP off of if it seems like everyone's sleeping too much.

If I would count that way, my only swedish char, and a vanderer in a emty area is a forgotten, as I am sure some/ a bunch people would remember the rest of them already(oldest chars turn 31 in a week)

Just make sure you leave some interesting notes behind, one day he'll be known as a famous traveller.
I really wish more people would write diaries and such, I'm always rifling through trash envelopes and such trying to find little bits of history but hardly ever see a complete journal,.

My chars normally write a little history of their adventures. Strangely enough, it's mostly the boring ones who end up finishing them.

And the rest dies trying?

I completely agree.. so I've taken my char with the most interesting story (oh, it's a great one really!) and started her diary.. it is 1000's of words long already (she's 26yo) and I'd like to think it is quite interesting.

Yep, except they just die trying to do interesting things, like trying to overthrow this oppressive dictator, or to conquer this midget little town.
You know.

One of mine started writing in a diary four days ago and has more than 1000 words already. I think about 1500.
I love diaries. ^^

I don't think a successful character has to be a leader. Some of my most favorite characters were ones that stayed inside and created their own little world with a small group of core characters that blended into a tight family. People would come and go from the building and it got where most of us hated to go outside for anything. Did they change the face of cantr..no, but they certainly entertained me. Mary Williams started out this way but was given control of the forest and had to come outside - perhaps that is why she was crabby most of the time.
