Why does no one introduce themselves anymore?

Postby Doug R. » Wed Feb 04, 2009 2:54 pm

There seems to be this pervasive frame of mind in Cantr now that anyone that comes into your town knows who you are. I hate having to ask people their names; it's just as awkward in Cantr as it is in real life. Come on, folks, if my character introduces himself, if you want to talk to him, give your name. It's common courtesy.

Nah. You don't just enter a room and go "Hi I'm _" either, do you? :S Unless you go into that room to talk to those people. I guess that just introducing when you talk would be fine. Sadly, sometimes stuff like:

1337.1 Man says: "Hey, Ann, did you see that egg fall?"
1337.2 Woman says: "Yeah, it was awesome!"
1337.3 Someone points at woman.
1337.3 Someone says: "Who are you?"

As that person should've heard her name was Ann, but nooo... it has to be all awkward "HI IM _ WHO R U?" "HI IM _ NICE 2 MEET U" :/

I'm fine with not introducing though. ^^,

Dudel introduces himself and others but not in the 'usual' manner of "This is ___ and I am ___" Points at.

I like to 'switch it up' and simply talk to someone the character knows or if its a type of person whom doesn't want others to know a name I'll 'em just not say it. Then again I'll also have the character hesitent to state the name if asked.

I've seen some odd situations where people have been dragged into places and jailed for not introducing themselves which is FUNNY but for the other player who may not have 'all the time in the world' might be irritating.

It's the first law in almost every town, which is kind of lame.

On the other hand, you'd think that while entering into direct conversation with someone else, you'd give your name after they give theirs. I notice this a bit now as well, Doug. I have some characters that don't give two craps about peoples' names even after they've introduced themselves, and he finds it easier just to give them nicknames. If you start calling someone by a nickname, they'll usually get their name out there sooner than later.

Hey, good idea DylPickle! Nicknames...

People might think that it's obvious your friend's name is this and that because you addressed them by that name but - no one can see who you are talking to, unless they reply to you and the observer makes the connection. There might be several unknowns having several discussions and it might be difficult to figure out who is addressing whom. It's a shame they haven't implemented that "talk to X in public" suggestion.

I try my hardest to a 'names to faces' situation in Cantr. I hear someone adress another by name and see somone else respond accordinly then... Copy Past... NAME!

Other then that, most don't 100% introduce themselves. I only have a couple characters that are always blatent with the "Hello I am ___." but in their own little way.

I do that usually too and put a ? behind it if they haven't spoken to me directly.

I don't expect people to give their names when they enter town. I'm perfectly happy with asking them.
