I think what ceselb means here is players who use the game rules to manipulate players, rather than use RP to interact with characters. They want to 'rule' their part of the game, 'pwn' the players in their vicinity.
Killing off characters -given the chance- of players who refuse to bow is part of their MO.

I'm not sure if InsaneIrony is currently facing that kind of trouble.

Tiamo - That usually happens anyway. As others have said in this topic, players dislike to kill off good RPd characters. It's hard to avoid, and I must say that I let myself get influenced by stuff like that, too. But I try avoiding killing anyway, as it sucks to lose characters. Locking them up is much more fun. :)

This is probably why I've been so hard hit. I don't RP as much as others mostly, but I do try to make things happen. Making things, building, fathering, sending people out, getting people to work, trading things. I don't see why this is any less valued than voluminous RP. But a lot of people seems to have it in for the progressive builder type.

I have to agree with ceselb. I think a perverse few take pleasure in killing off good players. It seems the only recourse is to become one of them if you want to survive past your 20's. Why not commit suicide and come back as a pirate? That seems to be the only way to make it in this game.

No don't you say that. Pirates might get a lot of attention but most of the world is still good. You might have to join pirates in order to survive but then you can just wait until they get attacked by a large enough group of law enforcements, then switch sides and turn upon them. Preferably in a point when you have gained access to healing food and maybe even a key. You might have to kill people in order to get trusted, but you could use less than 100% strength and maybe hit yourself with a waster when no one's watching in order to make your tiredness look sufficient. You shouldn't sell out your character's moralities just because they're in a tough spot.

I had a character who had to crush hematite for bandits and she felt bad about it because she knew they would use it to make new weapons and shields, but she got away.

I will say that, because that has been my experience. Though the people of Cantr are basically generous and good, these people do not survive. They are slaughtered without a second thought. I have seen this in too many towns to mention. Entire civilizations wiped out just for "fun". Well so be it. If you want to survive here it seems you have to be on the other side.

to survive you need to be apart of an orgainzed place or community, good or bad, i have character that are good in several towns that could survive and defeat large groups, the pirates, just have all the action all the time and that is what some players want, but bandits and theives and even pirates lives are short lived.

Thats not true. There are plenty of pirates, bandits, and theives that live rather long lives. Some long enough to be forgotten. I have ran into characters on my current account that have been stealing and killing since my last account. I ran into two seperate groups that split up from Bandits crew since I started playing again, some of them where still killing, others started a new life.

Adam has been killing people for about 60 years and no one has been able to stop him. He would be offended if called a pirate though. He has his reasons for what he does and they are good enough for him. But he would kill a pirate as quickly as someone who angers him.

Adam is one i have never heard of, and if has lived that long then i am sure his life is quite the tale.

To survive, I think you have to be strong, or at least quick, and if not that, lucky. I've had characters who survived bandit attacks, animal attacks, sleeping sickness outbreaks, and basically everything you can think of. It comes down to luck, really. Even big, strong towns can be defeated by a clever and lucky bandit crew.
