Cantr Awards 2008

Postby *Wiro » Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:16 pm

Stolen from this topic. Thanks to Encaitaron for allowing me to use the idea.

Um, so, the Cantr Awards 2008! What do you think was the best character of the year? The most original character? Funniest character?
Below there are a few of these topics, and all you have to do is nominate someone for them. The one who gets most nominations wins that topic.
In case of a tie there will be two winners (or three, four etc).

Please PM me your list, and I'll also try to get this featured in the webzine.

Best RPd character -
Nicest character -
Meanest characters -
Best town leader -
Worst town leader -
Funniest character -
Most annoying character -
Most perverted character -
Most fearsome character -
Best clothed character -
Cutest couple -
Manliest character -
Womanliest character -
Best company -
Worst company -
Bravest Character -
Dumbest character -

If you have any cool suggestions and you'd like to see them added to the list, PM me them! :)

Nice list. I have always wondered whether Cantr would improve if we would add a rating system in the game along those lines ... that every player can rate other's characters on such items and we get weekly / annual / etc. highscores ... But perhaps that would steer game play too much in particular directions without leaving it entirely open-ended ... The GAC never liked the idea :-) ...

But half the players would just vote for their mates which would make the tables somewhat distorted.

Wouldn't that just sort of average out? I mean, anyone can do that ... and surely a lot of players wouldn't ...

And it would be rating characters, not players. Although a player tends to put a part of oneself in their characters and if someone is attracted to someone's playing style, they'd be likely to vote on this person's characters even if they didn't know the identity of the player.

One problem is that for example in the category of "most perverted character", the perversion would likely be witnessed only a small amount of characters whereas if examples were posted, players who have never personally interacted with this character could have an impression of him. I've heard OOC about this one guy but I don't know his name so how could I vote for him?

I'd love to see such a thing implemented. Usually people post stuff like that in the RP Praise topic, but it'd mean revealing that you're the one playing that character. (Especially if it's one of those "We sit inside all the time, chatting and having fun"-kind of towns that I happen to end up in quite often, with very little people.)
Voting for them would give them a notice on a special page, so they could see what characters are appreciated for their good, funny or scary roleplaying without having to reveal that you're the player.

I personally dislike revealing myself as the player of some of my characters, as that could easily interfere with my own and others' decisions.

And Seko, obviously this shouldn't be for stuff you heard on the forum. It's better if it's about characters that were recently active to have deserved their vote. Else there'd be Adam Brinks or Nick Wolf MacGregor for scariest character. There should be a notice making it clear that it's about things you have witnessed as the player of your character.
No matter how many times people repeat how scary Nick is, you'll have to see him in action to feel it yourself. (At least, that's what it is like for me. I can't imagine myself in others their situations easily without knowing about their full background, personality, relationships etc etc...)

I would love to see different language groups too. Obviously it would be very confusing if there'd be Polish names through the English ones. So for each language group a new list of characters. I notice myself that the Dutch region usually allow much more character development than the English region. Probably because it's smaller and everyone's help is needed.

Perhaps the topics for nomination/voting/rating could be different for each language group. With a few basic ones in every group of course.

As for cheating... I doubt players would get their char on the list using tricks such as "You vote me, I vote you", most of the players are mature enough not to do such childish things.

And last.. Wether it would improve Cantr or not - it certainly would.
Currently we have tons of topics for "Peaceful", "Best RPd", "Most annoying" etc. characters. And they're often filled with lots of pages making it hard to get one absolute "winner" in that category.
That combined with the fact that not even all players have a forum account (some do check the forums without an account though) makes it easier for those to know what characters are doing well according to the other players. Especially if it's one of YOUR characters, it would certainly encourage to continue playing that one character to the best of your abilities. Or if it's a character you, as a player, saw, and you notice others like that character as well, then you could use that character as a "teacher". So yes, I'm all for such a feature.

Anyway, keep those nominations for the Cantr Awards 2008 coming! There can't be enough nominations. :)

I pretty much agree with all your comments, Wiro, but why this separation by language? I kind of like it better if it is all one community in this regard. Also some language groups are way too small for something like this to work well (random errors need to average out, so to speak), especially since player numbers are still going down. If some areas allow always for better roleplaying, it is nice if that shows in such statistics :-) ...

Especially because of those smaller language groups there should be a seperate section. Sure, on a non-language seperated list Spanish, Portugese and maybe Dutch characters might pop up between the English and Polish characters. But I highly doubt there will ever be a french or a russian character in that list. How are they supposed to profit from this if they aren't able to join? I am fine with a "global" list, but I don't think we should exclude smaller language groups by making it just one list.

These lists should be viewable by anyone from any language group, and you should be able to vote for people from other language groups, too.
My Dutch characters have encountered quite a few German and Spanish characters that are fun to roleplay with.

The problem with the minor language groups is that there are hardly enough characters for a top ten sometimes.

I don't understand why the smaller groups would have so much less chance of making the top ten ... I mean, yes, chances of seeing a Russian there would be much lower than seeing English there, but that doesn't mean that any random Russian player has less chances than any random English player ...

Well, if there is only a total of a dozen other Russian characters then that's very probably the effective maximum of votes a Russian character can get. An English character in one of the larger cities could easily get this number of votes without even leaving his town.
