Character descriptions

Postby lordcooper » Fri Nov 28, 2008 1:39 am

I think it would be cool if players could post a brief description of their characters appearance.
Just simple things like hair colour / length, eye colour, height, weight, build, distinguishing features.
It could be shown when you check their character page or if you hold the mouse over their name ingame.

This is a duplicate, would you please use search before posting a new topic about something that has been mentioned several times?

The main arguments against this have been:

  • It would be possible to tell a person's language group based on which language they used to write their description, and this might lead into racism (killing people right as they arrive in town, without ever getting a chance to talk).
  • A person could write profanities in the description box, or personal messages to other people that are not really a description.
  • A person could switch their appearance unlimitedly so they could be described as hideously ugly one day and beautiful the other, with brown eyes turning to blue or magenta or whatever.
  • Some people have threatened to quit if there were appearances because they prefer everybody is just a green blob to avoid racism and bullying based on appearance, or something. (I think it's childish to threaten to quit over any trivial reason.)

1) Make it English only. For people who can't write English there will be some choices in THEIR language that will appear in English.

Of course that way some people still can't read it. But that's the same thing with emotes. (Emoting in English when multiple language groups are in a place)

2) You can do that in the chat, too. But maybe just some choices (short, medium-sized, tall etc)

3) The description they give can ONLY be changed ONCE every ten years - that should be long enough for a change to happen, no?

4) Soooo? That's what happens in real life too. Of course there are going to be people yelling "Fatty!", but that's part of the fun. :)

Okay then, how about if there wasnt an option to write your own description, but it was a case of ticking boxes.

eg

HAIR

long[ ] medium[ ] short[ ]

red[ ] brown[ ] black[ ] blonde[ ] etc[ ] etc[ ]

I suppose that would be good. The options would be limited but I think that's better than having no options at all. Who has some counter-arguments?

Possibly new options could be added at players request. A bit like clothing etc

I got one! What if later in life something happens when my char had long hair but then it was cut or nearly cut by somthing.

Then again, balding chars. You get older you go bald.

Um... Eat more food get fat eat less get thin.

Its kinda hard to make it uberly permenant when the game is ALL about the rp and this would open up an awsome can of worms eithor way. (Redrum the spelling)

Still for it!

If it's possible to make this wor in a good way then I like it. You should be able to change (chars that are very old shouldn't have blond hair), but not so you can have blond hair one day and then black the next day... Make a good system and I'm for it :)

Every 10 years you can change it? That seems long enough for a change to me.

Balding should be simple to code in, as hair slowly going grey / growing.
After the initial setup when creating a character, it should be possible to alter appearances with projects eg hairdressing / exercise to lose weight (could maybe consume water) possibly include hair dyes and have a choice between several default hairstyles...

But there are people who think that since Cantrians don't get weak when they age, they shouldn't deteriorate in other ways either. Many old people ignore their age because the players are so young it's hard to imagine what it's like to be 80+.

I have one totally bald character and another one with a bald spot.

Well that comes to player choice don't it?

Good example: One of my grandfather is kinda cripled. Yet the other is more 'spry' then me. (He works out a LOT more then me too) So its very possible to be energenic and not loose hair when you age.

Also I'm 21 and I have a small bald spot. Nothing bad its because of how my hair parts. (Well then its my part and not a bald spot I'm told... whatever)

Just saying it is at very possible.

But if balding was hard coded, it doesn't sound like people would have a choice. People should be allowed to pick their own appearance.

Then don't hard code it! Make it an option at the 10year mark or even a general option. But then you can't just magicly grow hair back.

Hmmm... Tis a puzzle it is!

How about having some sort of appearance tree for things like that? Hair would still grow etc normally but say at 40 you get the option to have a receding hairline, if you choose yes then at 50 you have the option to be balding, at the same stage, or bald, whereas if you choose no, then at 50 you are given the same option again.
