Whistle

Postby Rob Maule » Thu Sep 11, 2003 3:31 am

I have a character on the water and got to thinking. She could see another boat, but could do nothing to signal to it. Enter, whistle:

Materials: 10g iron OR 60g wood
Tools: chisel OR carving knife ?

Heard from:
    * town proper to building (not inner rooms)
    * town proper to small distance on road (visa-versa)
    * building to 1 level of inner rooms (not heard outside)
    * medium distance on road (ahead and behind)
    * large distance on water

I did some more thinking and I think it would be neat to be able to input how many times the whistle is blown and whether it is a long or short blow:
You see Rob Maule blow a whistle 3 long times.

And if you were inside a building, further on down a road, or a long ways out on the water, you'd see:
You hear a whistle being blown 2 short times.

This leads way to signals of all sorts. Also, perhaps knocking can be done like this. There is currently no distinction between two knocks 36 Cantr minutes apart or 6 minutes apart.

I personally really like these ideas.

I am in full support as well. I always kinda wondered about the knock system..and the whistle is really a cool thing to have. :D

Yeah, the whistle sounds cool, it'd be nice to have some sort of signal device.

Yeah, great idea Rob. It could be used for a lot more than just at sea, too. Sound going through walls would be good. Which reminds me, remember when we were talking about windows (this is waaay back)? The idea for windows was that we could add them to our buildings so you could see whats going on outside (but not hear them, unless the windows were open). I think both should be added, but two types of windows should exist. Windows that can open, and windows that cant. Also, if windows existed drapes should be made as well, so you can cover your window when you want. Perhaps a project could be made, that you could peep in a window, to see what they were doing that turn. I dunno, im just rambling, but if the programmers can make sense of it they should implement it.

Well I did a little more thinking and came up with a next-generation whistle. Sort of like the iron drill over the pickaxe. I call it... the foghorn.

Materials needed would be say 50g iron and 100g wood.

I was also thinking of making it a project to use, like a campfire, with the character adding either 30g wood or 15g coal per use. But maybe there could just be a limit of 5 times per day or make it unlimited like knocking.

It would be heard from:
    * town to road (further)
    * town to building (plus 1 inner room)
    * a building to 2 levels of inner rooms (and heard outside in town)
    * a larger distance on road
    * a larger distance on water

Any thought?

Another progression: "air raid" siren. Have to call it something else like "warning siren".

A new project with a small fire pit and just wood: smoke signals

Back to the boat theme: semiphore {that's the thing using flags right}

Signal mirrors...

---Ressurected--

I think it would be good to add a destination to, especially from sea.

You hear a whistle from Direction 300. Would be great for lost sea goers.

In a similar vein, how about signal-fires which could be used to communicate with adjacent towns? Handy in times of war, I would think.

If you implement this, you firmly establish that Cantr has sound (not that "you hear someone knocking" shouldn't do that already, duh), and the next step will be a resurrection of the musical instrument debate.

You should also be able to make a whistle out of reeds and bone. Iron should *not* be required (actually, iron would be a really annoying material for a whistle, as they taste awful-- steel's better, but the natural materials are better still). A metal whistle's only advantage is that it carries a little farther and doesn't sound natural (you can't mistake a metal whistle for a really high-pitched wind, for instance).

yea, I think different whistles made of different things would be good, each with a different sound, and different deterioration rates, so that anyone can make one,

how about bone whistles and hunting horns both being made out of large bones for the simple reason we have so many of them and nothing to bloody use em for :lol:

Is it possible to find conch shells on any of the beaches? They can be used for a horn right?
