Hide items/resources

Postby Sillysavage » Mon Nov 10, 2008 2:39 am

The above subject is a bit vague. What I mean by hiding items is simply to put weapons and tools into containers. I'm sure there are a 1000 posts dealing with this same subject but I'm to lazy to look at 10's of 1000's of posts where someone has started a thread like this. I know you can put food items and the like in containers but...if you can do that...then you should be able to put that trusty crowbar in a container as well. Anyone have an opinion on this?

The title of this is a bit deceptive, you might want to change it to "Hiding items/resources" - as I interpreted it as being a suggestion for items which are made of hide.

Currently, there are several holdable items which are "hidden" from view when in a player's inventory - small items like knives, etc, to allow people to smuggle small weapons. However it might weight the odds a bit too much in favour of saboteurs and thieves if crowbars and large weapons could be hidden in containers.

Now if you are talking about static containers which are on the ground, as opposed to being in a player's inventory, then I think the only thing stopping items from being put into them is the game mechanic - quantifiable masses like resources can be put into them, but not individual objects. The question is, is it really neccesary for this to be possible, besides for the sake of realism?

And notes!! I would love to be able to store a note in a spoon. :)

And there are a few situations in which this could be very useful, like when one of your chars is a thief and he/she tries to hide something. Perhaps hiding a crowbar. But to use it, you have to take it out.

This is such an old subject I suggested it when I was a newbie, in form of gift wrapping. And I suppose people have suggested it even before that. I think the primary argument delaying the implementation was item dimensions but if that could be forgotten about and weight was used instead... would it really be that hard to program?

The items weight would roughly determine its size. (Sort of...) You would just have to use common sense when programing such items that could be put into...say a duffel bag. Talk about your paranoia! Those that carried duffel bags around would be suspected thief's almost immediately! Everyone would think they had crowbars stuffed into them.
But that's not the only thing...smaller weapons, tools, as in tool bag or pouch. All sort's of things. It should have been made to where every item you carried was visible. But if you had containers or storage devises, those items could be put into such and not be seen. *shrugs* I suppose its to late for that now.

Weight shouldn't really be a factor of item dimension. and isn't hard to attribute a volume to something, just make it like a "secondary weight" >>.
Since there ins't dimensions to measure, just make values for every item. This would also solve in case someone wants to put something too big inside a burlap sack like a crossbow.

However I don't like the idea of creating values for every item. For the sake of balancing I think one might create some very weird stuff.

Rethinking the weight issue, A person can carry...15K. But a sloop takes...what, 14k of wood to build. Isn't that roughly 70 lbs.? Where does the sense in that come into play? I really don't think weight here is the problem... :?
