Could you expand upon that? Would you have ever even looked for a game like this if it weren't for your friends? You are the demographic that we're looking to expand into.

 Well to be honest, I wasn't really the kind of person that would sit in front of the computer back then.. And I wasn't really into trying new things. I watched them play and asked questions.. Then one of them set up an account for me, said the first few words for me and then here I am.. I wasn't sure what to do since this is the first time playing a game like this. Not sure if I would have even looked.. I mean to be honest, I didn't know they existed or anything like that..

So, the existential question is, how can you identify someone that would like Cantr, without them displaying any typical signs of being a prospective player? I guess there really isn't any way, sort of advertising in some really counter-intuitive places.

I joined Nov 2004. I was trying to write a novel for NANOWRIMO and got stuck on plot and went into the procrastination forum/thread and read about cantr and came and checked it out.....Needless to say, I never finished the novel.

Age: 33

I think I joined in December '04/January '05. It was holiday break and I was searching for a text-based free-form online interactive roleplaying game where I could play with real people online with relatively few rules or mechanics, focus on character development, and explore various aspects of culture and society - even create new culture and society. I stumbled across Cantr via google that way. I was looking for something to fill the D&D void. Cantr was a perfect fit for that.

Age: 29.75

Occupation: Graduate student / Scientist / Lover / Storyteller

P.S. - I miss playing alongside Angelspice's characters. We had some good times back in the day.

When I unsubbed my first account, I started writing a novel to fill the void that Cantr left. Now that I'm back, I know that Cantr allows me to develop characters in a dynamic and unpredictable setting that can be a benefit to writing. Do you think that it would be a good marketing angle to try and "sell" Cantr to writers as a character development tool? It was one of the angles I was thinking of.

I don't know.....I'm not really a writer......It was just one of those things I tried because I had time to fill. (One of my sisters wants to be a writer and kinda tore what I did write apart, so.......I didn't persue it anymore.)

P.S. I miss playing alongside your charries, too wichita.

I'm not sure how well it would be for writers. It would be most useful as a muse more than anything else. The format of the events page really goes a long way towards killing any quality narrative flow. It might be better for screenwriters because of that, though...

I find much more fulfillment in my writing through a play by e-mail format. There you can post several paragraphs per week and get a good novel flow going. Beyond that - your characters probably won't die off when you get busy for a week!! The game is pretty much on pause while you're away.

I didn't mean using Cantr to write a story, I meant to use it to develop character personality. Cantr is entirely responsible for training me on how to develop a fictional character's personality and make it real. It's a natural medium for it.

Possibly. Seko and I had an incredibly lively couple in the old days before Silas got butchered. Whoever it was that played Bruce Campbell also had a lovely knack in the 'less is more' department.

What got you to try Cantr: Saw it described as having 'great game mechanics but poor interface' on another PBBG/RPG in development that credited this as their motivator to build a new game. So I came to see for myself. :D

Your age when you first joined:
Easy - 25, still are.

Your occupational status when you first joined (student, employed, unemployed, etc.):
full time employed, freelance photographer, graphic designer, virtual world designer and horse breeder/trainer (no, I really don't have any spare time).

Game background prior to playing Cantr: Computer - Nethack for 10 years (and Hack prior). Still playing, still not finished it. That game will always be my depth gauge. Browser - various horse breeding PBBGs. Consoles - Oblivion, and more recently Fable II.

..and I'm a female player. So I get double points. Nerr :D
