A large part of players are under 18 and not letting them play would put a great dent in the numbers, not to mention all the people over 18 quitting because they think rape is worse than getting killed with a battle axe. Or that even getting pregnant from consensual sex would ruin the game. I mean you can't chase after note thieves and chop them to bits with a battle axe if you're pregnant or have to look after a baby.

My point was that making people agree that they are over 18 in no way assures that they are over 18. If I had to lie about my age to try out a new game I'd do it in a heartbeat. Presumably the warning would at least serve to warn people under 18 that they are about to play a game with "adult" content (even though age ratings are largely ignored and people under 18 have heard of or seen much more provocative things in real life than a game or a movie could show them).
I thought Cantr was supposed to be based on the real world. If people would rather deal with the very same things in real life (where they have consequences) maybe Cantr isn't for them.
edit: The problem of newspawns immediately running around and raping everybody they can find as soon as it is implemented would be balanced off by the fact that their characters (who would presumably start at about the age of 5) would have to go through puberty before the option to have sex was available to them. In this way, people would have to have been playing cantr for at least 10 game years before they had the power to affect the game world in the same way that adults can.

._. Or the servers have to be moved to some faraway country with barely any laws about that.
Or I'll have to play Cantr illegaly.
edit:
Joo, children can't rape adults then, but what about the other way around? >=)

If sex as a project is ever implemented, I'm finished. And to those of you participating in the disgusting turn this thread has taken, I assure you that if you had ever been raped, or knew someone that was raped, you'd understand why I'm so disgusted with this thread.
Rape is not funny. Rape should not be a topic of light-hearted conversation.
Please practice common courtesy and not not make light of a subject that is highly offensive (or should be) to the vast majority of players here.

Okay, I agree that rape or child abuse should never be possible in Cantr, since a lot of people obviously find the subjects distasteful, and they have no place in a game like Cantr. Perhaps the discussion did "overflow" a bit, and I apologise if anybody was offended by my comments.
However, if babies (and presumably pregnancy) are to be implemented (and I understand that they are on the list of features awaiting implementation) then there needs to be some kind of consent on the part of the parent(s) to get pregnant in the first place. If procreation doesn't take the form of a short-term "project," what form should it take?

This is the link to the accepted suggestion, but as you can see when you read it, the method of implementation is hotly debated, and so many people are against it that it arguably shouldn't have been accepted in the first place.
This suggestion has gone wildly off-topic. If you want to talk about babies, sex, etc, consider doing it in the above thread.

We had a similar discussion about rape/sex/babies in portuguese forum, with suggestions actually quite near from what Joo said. However, our mate who made the topic was not confident enough to post it here. This Dejá vù feeling makes me think we should have brought that here.

I don't really care about the implementation of sex results. It is a matter of responsibility, people should be capable of handling and end. I mean, going "Woo, sex!!!" and doing that everywhere for no apperant reason other than bothering the other players is plain stuped. When such things happen I fell like cantr should have a "erase events" tool to erase such stupidities made by spammers or annoying strangers.
Also, I don't know if I should be commenting about rape, since I don't know past experinces and such but I do not take this lightly nor I would like to sound like an evil emotionless bastard and hurt someone. Still, I can't see why everyone shouldn't be allowed of roleplaying it, since as gruesome events can be roleplayed, for roleplay purposes solely. At least, make it obligatorily consensual between players .
Also, consider hosting Cantr in Kazakhstan.
I think there is where they hosted Carmageddon downloads.

The fact that it is possible for other players to depict sexual activities doesn't mean that the game inherently contains sex (in fact, that is the very problem that is being discussed). If that logic was valid, then people under the age of 18 wouldn't be able to use Outlook Express because someone might send them an email containing pornographic images.
If sexual activity is implemented, then I believe the standard workaround is to make players "agree" that they are 18 or older when signing up.
That is what I was getting at, a disclaimer or something along those lines while signing up.

Well I suggested in that other topic that one way of making sex completely invisible would be only making it work if both characters involved tagged each other as a preferred sex partner, but this tagging didn't create any event or visible marker so the only way of letting someone know you want to have sex with them would be through speaking and rp. There was a useful diagram too.

I totally agree with this.
Let's go back to the original topic: what knowledge would/should/do you expect newspawns have about the Cantr world at the moment of spawning? Geographical/local knowledge? Technical knowledge (the wiki)? Skills? Historical knowledge? All the tricks and trades of the Cantr game system?
Do the newspawn have some kind of (imaginary) youth, or is spawning like birth? And how does this relate to the spawning location?
My suggestion would be to provide a newbie guide in which is clearly stated what a newspawn is supposed to know (and what not).

My newspawns know nothing of the Cantr world, but have all the knowledge in the wiki - I just can't help it.

I think it can be assumed that all characters start with the knowledge contained in the wiki. Like the ability to walk, or speak, learning these things take too long and would be too repetitive and tedious to include in the game. However I agree that players should exercise restraint in using the knowledge from the wiki offhandedly. A newspawn shouldn't be able to describe in detail how to manufacture a crossbow, but would rather deduce the idea from making a composite recurve bow, or seeing an existing crossbow, or being told by somebody who's made a crossbow. So, rather than setting as a goal for your character, "I want a crossbow," think along the lines of, "I want something that will allow me to hurt people, and is a symbol of power." (I am of course speaking purely in terms of good RPing. None of this would be enforced by the game).
But any kind of existence, or knowledge of events occuring before the person spawns would be a very bad move. If it becomes accepted that a person has a "history," this will give them the freedom to make up events of the past. And this will lead to annoyance for other players, and conflicting RP.
(OT: About the subject of sex, I think it is a very good idea for this to be a "silent" activity. In real life, most responsible people with decency have sex indoors when they are alone together. If they want to let other people know about it they can go down the workhouse and brag to their friends. But seeing "You see a man in his twenties having sex with a woman in her twenties" would definitely be too technically descriptive).

One of my characters is on a completely undevelopped island that has barely any iron and possibly not even any amount of steel. And yet the people there are like "Oh we don't have any iron."
But they never left that village. So how do they know about iron? There are not much travellers there either.
My character knows about iron because of the locks she has seen.
I just wish more people would roleplay like this instead of playing Cantr to "win", if you get what I mean.

Yeah, there is no iron or bronze so far on the Finnish continent, yet people are actively looking for the resources and some wise guys have gathered several kilos of limestone even though their characters should have no idea what it's good for. People should be more like "we're missing something to make shields out of, chitin is not enough, must find a hard substance".

It would make more sense if people had to wait 6 days without being able to do anything besides watch but they'd be visible. That way they would have no better things to do but to learn about their community and the community would know there was a newspawn about to appear.
That's a good point. The 6 days though would be very boring for the player. Maybe it should be an optional way to start though I doubt anyone would use it becuase when I'm ready to start a new one, I am ready to start.

Agreed. That accepted suggestion not making progress.

Geographical/local knowledge? None but the location tab and the paths leading off to somewhere they don't know with blind faith in maps if they are even available. I rather like the way that no lands have a true name.
Technical knowledge (the wiki)? Skills? Everything in the wiki along with...

I like the inherted skills implementation. While you may know all you may be horrid at some things.
Historical knowledge? None but what is on the ground or said which is the problem. So few histories are written in game.

I really dislike about how in some places newspawns are treated with distrusts while strangers coming in off a road are greeted more warmly.

Considering privacy, bordom, and what one should know....
A "hearsay" button for a event line.
It takes three seperate players (not characters) to create make an event become "hearsay".
There is an indicator on how many people have have pushed the event to hearsay.
"Hearsay" is still only an event and is only kept as long as other events, it is just an event that newspawns can see.
Should the same be true for people from a path or boat? Or even spread inside buildings? It sort of represents the unsaid town buzz.
