Naming tools

Postby *Wiro » Wed Oct 15, 2008 9:25 pm

Why not have tools work like names? When you see them they're just called something short that describes them in short, and when you click on them you see a better explanation.

It would be nice to see different places have different tools.
And especially in non-english areas that don't have tool names completely translated this would be useful.

Discuss.

Do you mean give them dynamic names, like people? And would this apply to each indivual tool, or the tool type as a whole?

Regardless, it seems a bit uneccesary, since a tool should always be globally recognised for what it is (i.e. there's no need to call a hammer something else - it's simply that, a hammer -- as opposed to a person, or place, who has individuality).

Now if you were talking about adding labels to items, this would be particularly useful for keys and possibly weapons. For example: Key No. 12345678 labelled "Food Storage", or a diamond encrusted steel saber labelled "The Sacret Blade of Eh-Ru-Khan - Do Not Touch!" Of course, if this were implemented, it should also be possible to remove labels.

I imagine labeling tools and weapons and such would be an easy thing to implement. It would be a simple matter of copying a portion of code from the letter seal and applying it to all tools and weapons.

No, I meant each tool-type to be named.
This should help getting some kind of "learning" and "schools" to be made in Cantr.

I'm not sure how that would benefit the game. Most people know what each tool is...and the ones that don't just use whatever tools they need to complete a project. I do like the idea of labeling tools and weapons though. It would certainly pose a problem for newspawns who steal weapons and then try to claim they made them.

And what would you see when you first see the tool?

Unnamed tool? That wouldn't work, we need at least a description of it so we know what it is.

So, maybe a lengthy description about how the tool is? And who would make all those descriptions for every tool, and make them so good that everyone can understand what the tool is by just reading that?

Maybe we could just make a picture for every tool so no description is needed. But that would mean someone had to make all those pictures and you bet there's people who wouldn't like having to look at pictures to recognize a tool.

So finally, maybe we could just leave the names as they are and role-play the whole think, like "You see Someone saying: *showing his newly made hammer at everyone* Just take a look at this new tool I made for breaking stone! I call it a blaster! Anyone wants me to make a blaster for you?". But this we can do already and it's not usual to see it so I suppose it's not a good option either...

Tell me if you have a better option, or a different opinion on these ones...

"When you see them they're just called something short that describes them in short, and when you click on them you see a better explanation. "

But that wouldn't work as it would be too long. So "unnamed tool" wouldn't be that bad. It's like that with locations, too. :P

So basically...

You use some stone on manafacturing an unnamed tool.

And when you click on it you get a description of the tool and you can actually name it.

And I don't like having to roleplay tool-naming. Everyone else will still see YOU wearing a HAMMER. Not a blaster. And you, too, see yourself holding a HAMMER.

If you can name it, you see yourself holding a blaster.
And if others call it a blaster as well, then they'll see a blaster too.
But of course they can choose to name it differently as well.

Interesting idea, but how far would that lead?
People naming vehicles as "fast moving thing with 4 wheels"
Wood being named "brown thing"

Would make trading between villages pretty hard if resources were called different things...

You can name places "Poopy world lol pretty girls here." but others don't see that. Same thing with tools.

And isn't the different resources have different names (or tools in this case) how it works in real life too?

We have language groups for a reason. Tools have standardized names because it's assumed that characters know what they are based on experience gathered in the 20 years before spawning. Sure it would be nice to come up with unique names for things that are new on a region, for example saag aloo or cookies, and not have some newspawn call them by the old name that has never been used in that community. In a way it would be nice if towns were allowed to have an OOC note that explains the culture and special terminology used there so that newspawns didn't bring in OOC knowledge. Maybe even something that wasn't on the ground but appeared in events after spawning. Maybe I should suggest it separately.

If tools could be named after the character who made them (like coins are connected to the machine on which they are made), brands could be introduced. Like a Stradivarius violin as opposed to a John Doe-violin.
Or a Mercedes car versus a Buick car.
The item would still be called what it is (a stone hammer, a machete), but with the addition of the creator's mark (a Strong Smurf stone hammer, a Mary Roe machete).

This opens all kinds of roleplaying opportunities, gives a chance of defining 'ownership' of (stolen?, sold?) items, and eventually could be the basis for different qualities of tools/weapons/vehicles/machines.

But that's a duplicate suggestion. Engraving weapons and such has been suggested in another topic. Although dynamic naming for everything has also been suggested and that would cover tools as well. It would be great if tools could be labeled or engraved so that if someone stole them, they would also have to spend a day in filing out the engraving. The code already exists in building signs and even the tools could be the same. But there should only be room for one sign on a tool or a piece of weaponry and maybe removing an engraving would add some extra deterioration because you need to remove material.

The text on a coin cannot be altered. And you cannot change a Toyota into a Volvo by just replacing the brand mark.
A Tiamo longbow will always be a Tiamo longbow, which is a sign of pure quality!

I like the idea of adding my own desc to a tool.

Like keep the names the way they are now but make it so I can name it.

You know like Dudel has a hammer.

You say: "Behold my mighty Thwacker!"

Then you can name the hammer 'Thwacker' and others could see in in the desc. Like in desc of buildings. You could rp the thwacker thing anyway tho.
