Just an idea I had that maybe some kind of learning system could be implemented for characters.
For example:
Right now, one of my characters is making a hammer. They are making this because they can see it's a requirement to make something else they desire.
Now, a character that spawned two days ago probably shouldnt even know what a hammer is, let alone how to make one, and definitely not know what they need (to the gram!) to manufacture it.
So what I'm suggesting is that maybe characters should only be able to manufacture something after being shown how to by someone who already knows how this can be done.
Another solution could be to have books characters could read (as a project) to teach them about certain things eg metalwork, manufacturing clothing, farming etc
Of course, certain things like farming would need to be possible for newspawns, but maybe they would be less efficient than a fully fledged farmer.
Just thinking that this would add more realism to the game and further promote cooperation, as well as allowing characters to become specialists in certain fields rather than everyone being able to do pretty much everything.
Characted learning.

And then, a reset occurs. No one knows how to do a thing and no one will ever learn how to because there's no one to learn them.
Everyone stays simple and will be a farmer for the rest of his/her life.
Anyway, a good roleplayer does these things themself.
When someone asked me how to make iron, I said I didn't know. Even though I do, my character didn't. He never saw how to do it, and never tried to either.
Only if your character actually made a certain thing themself they should tell others how to do that.
And if there are books, that means someone must've written them.
Considering no one should know how to do all those things, they wouldn't write them. So that means they were pre-written, which is stupid.
I think that these things should all be done by the players themself.

Besides learning, characters always could 'invent' how to make things. This, of course, would be a rare event. Maybe an invention-project would be needed, with a chance of success based on the availability of the correct resources. Or even having seen the result somewhere (someone wielding the weapon, a vehicle driving by, someone using the tool for resource gathering, etc). Specialization in the correct skill should also help.
I think this subject has been discussed in many prior topics.

The history is, as I understand it, that established players got sick of countless newspawns asking the same questions and thus the Wiki was invented. A pity in many ways imho, but that's the way it is. There are ig encyclopediae about manufacturing, but the tinkering of project requirements over the years has made a lot of them inaccurate now... so maybe the wiki is the only way out.
Besides, what were these chars doing for the first 20 years of their lives? Some may have studied hard and know quite a bit, but if your char isn't one of these, act ignorant. I'm afraid he won't get much help apart from OOC comments aabout using the wiki.

But the new character wouldnt need to learn everything, that's the entire point!
One character should not be capable of manufacturing so many different things. Making these books ( or possibly doing it another way ) would mean that characters would be far more unique. Think of how many towns have 1 huge company that does everything.
This would allow for far more variety; smithys, farmers, carpenters, tailors etc etc

This sounds pretty close to the invention idea from way back, which I would have liked to see. The point was that it would create schools, teachers etc and encourage specialisation as lordcopper mentions. But too many people were opposed to it because of the implications on their characters, i.e. do they suddenly forget how to do things or does it only apply to newspawns and thus creating a disadvantage for them?

But if a reset or Cantr III ever happens I'd love to see it implemented. I'd envisioned two types of project, one to invent and one to teach.
The invention one would be either based on technology desired, e.g. tools, vehicles, machines etc or by resources, e.g. you try to invent something using stone, you get stone hammer, stone pot, etc.
Teaching would then let you pass on how to make whatever things you have invented.
