Is it a breach?

Postby berserk9779 » Fri Mar 26, 2004 9:00 pm

Is it a breach to know how something works? i mean, is it a breach to know that a smelting furnace is used to make steel without ever seing one?
I Know how to build it, i must know what is it for....

i am sure this has already been discussed, just i don't know where...

I don't think it is. I mean how would people have found out in the first place. They don't always have to be known I think. I just don't think you are allowed to know where other things are or what materials are in a certain location by your other characters.

IMO logic can be used to determine which machine may do what you want.

I would think that the exact reciepe for steel or even the components should wait until you built the thing or the character has seen one.

But another staff member will have to make an offical call.

..... Wait if it was this way wouldn't it mean people wouldn't know how to use a hammar or a trowel until they have seen it in action and they also wouldn't know how to build things. By that logic it would also mean they don't know what you do with food.

I usually go with the overall advancement of the char's birthplace, and the personality of said character. Since one of my chars was born in Siom, and took a job in mining and heavy industry, he would likely have a vague idea of how to make steel, (i.e that it requires a smelter and iron, and coal, and some other stuff) But he's never actually made any. On the other hand, I have others that started in rather poor surroundings, and had to learn things by visiting nearby towns.

If I wasn't clear I meant for using machines.

I consider all projects my character can start fair game for knowing details. That is what seperates machines you cannot exactly see what they do until you go to use one or see it in use. But you should be able to make "guesses" as to generally smelting is something to do with metal.

I understand, but it has some real lame implications. Example: the Aki island, where there is next to nothing, someone would have to discover how to crush hematite by building every machinery on the list ubtill he gets to the right one, that is way down on the list.
This is really unlikely to happen...

Not really. At the moment there is a limited amout of machines you can build with no iron and no iron tools. And one of my characters is in an Aki town and we did build them all. There is only three last time I looked and one can be elminated from metal work due to it's name.

not every town on the Aki island is slow but some have gotten quite a few machines ctarted or finished and i think the iron smelting thing has been discovered in 2 town's atleast since my char got told how to do it by someone in another town. we'll the mahines to use anyway.

Someone randomly builds the machine and you have a smelter furnance and that person is given credit for inventing.

The question you should ask is if your character has never seen steel or iron (or anything made from it) then why would they think they would need?

Remember, your knowledge isn't the knowledge of your characters. Towns that haven't seen iron and steel wouldn't have a need for it because they do not know of the existence.

Your playing at a higher level than I am.

Being in a place that lacks iron my characters will crave it just not now exactly what to do about it.

That is as far to the high end of role play as I will go considering that there are others who do not get caught who simply run staight to where they can get some. I don't mind going a little slow and do reasearch to stay within the CR boundary but full stop is farther than I go.

Iron places grow too strong too fast anyway so non-iron places need help to keep up.

I admire the progress (or purposeful lack thereof) on the new iron and the new steel in one of the iron places. I am doing my best not to push too quickly. The fact that not one stone table has been built there is a testatamite to good RP. I am not in charge there whoever is hats off to you for just not going full steam ahead even at this late date.

A lot of my chars don't know what iron or steel is, and/or couldn't care less.

mmmmm.... I see badger and NVN point, but if you know how to build iron weapons and iron tools you must have an ideo of what they are... Otherwise, following your reasoning your chars shouldn't be able to farm, dig and even speak before being told to...

I consider farming, speaking are just natural survival skills. Your character needs to eat and your character needs to communicate. And since my characters are twenty then they already know how to do those things. Plus if my characters are twenty and they are in a town with iron and steel then they know what they are but that still means they might not want it or need it. One must look to the needs and wants of your character.
