Marol's quit the game, leaving no active members of the Programming department. We have several competent and active programming aspirants, but they're helpless to do anything. The time has come to face the inevitable: One glitch, one bug, will kill the game for good (or until Jos finds time to fix it). We may lose access to the forum.

I think we should establish an off-server place for the community to congregate when things finally go dark. There are two facebook communities already, but I know a lot of folks don't want to deal with getting a facebook profile just for one thing. There is yahoogroups, or googlegroups (I like yahoo personally). I don't think the IRC is good enough, since not everyone likes chat, and the link to it will be lost with the server, and it doesn't archive.

It would just be nice to have someplace to turn to commiserate, discuss Cantr substitutes, and pass along updates that people may have heard about Cantr's status.

I'm willing to set up a yahoogroup, which can be viewed either in thread format or by email. What does everyone else think?

I say do it. Is there a way we can give the programmers more power? Or I believe someone said that each of them are connected to a small part, if so is there a way they can all work together?

A yahoo group might be what we need though, either that or google.

After all this time, going back to yahoo? lol, seems we've come almost full circle.

I have a server I can set up a forum on. It's an old desktop connected on my home cable broadband, so it'd be interesting to see how the connection and pc would cope, but it's all configured for virtual hosting and I can easily make a subdomain on one of my domains.

All I'd ask is being able to place ads on the site for I'm a poor student and need all the income I can muster.

That said, Jos has said there is a second server, which is currently unused, which the forums and such could go on

I honestly don't think we can rely on Jos for anything at this point.

I've joined the old yahoo, and it is entirely spam. Short of a purge and a transfer of admin rights (which I just said we shouldn't count on), the group shouldn't be resurrected.

Solfius, your offer is generous, but relying on a single person is what put the game in it's current state. If you ever wanted to quit hosting, or the PC blew out, we'd have to migrate again. I think a commercial provider is our best and most reliable option, with multiple people assigned as admins.

I don't see why we should fragment the active player base even more by creating additional forums than this one. When I first started playing, I was hesitant to join this forum, and I'm sure are many more active players who aren't in the forum, so why not just do it here? If the forum goes down, the game goes down with it so you really don't have anything to lose.

I understand concerns about fragmenting the player base, but I agree that it would be good to have a working backup. For my part, at least, I will want to have access to a forum even if the game goes down to coordinate further activities. We don't have to use the other forum until it becomes necessary.

After a few days, I'll change it so I have to approve all memberships, which will prevent spam. You can also select to check it via "web only" which will prevent you from getting emails.

This is only for if the forum goes down. Lots of people think of Cantr as a family, and it can be hard to be cut off from that family. I will make sure that the group doesn't supplant the forum (not like it would anyway) by turning posting off if necessary.

Oh, and if anyone wants to be a moderator, let me know.

At least it'll reveal the people who have a Yahoo account or might make new people create accounts - that sounds like an increased chance of finding enough players for Yahoo Graffiti. Playing with strangers sucks, there's always someone who writes the word when they're too lazy to figure out how to draw it, or imagine that no one would get it anyway.
