"New Event" indication on player page

Postby tiddy ogg » Wed Aug 06, 2008 9:06 am

A year or two back, Merrill or CJ added some alt text or something so if the char name was lit up showing that new events had occurred the text associated with it changed from "Go to page of" to "New Events"
In the last 24 hourse this has been removed. Please reinstate it as otherwise I have to check all chars instead of the relevant ones.

it's part of a general error affecting the new events highlighting.

So characters with new events aren't being highlighted white and the alt text isn't changing either.

Out of interest, are you getting the MySQL error reports at the top of your character page the same as everyone else? I presume so

Yes, discovered that afterwards.
My software lets me jump from button to button, so I didn't notice those errors.

And who messed with the code and for what purpose? This error is quite glaring, surely after changing something a programmer should log in and do some testing to see if there are any obvious bugs like this.

My best guess (as I have no access to that portion of the code) is that the problem is simply the corruption of a database table and not any change in the code itself. The table will need to be rebuilt.

Oh, but how could that happen? Surely there must be some trigger.

Without further access to the database I can't even venture a guess. It could be any number of things, from a random bit error to a hardware failure to a coding bug - possibly a bug written three years ago that only manifested itself today.

This problem really needs to be fixed pretty fast. It's been going on for a few days now and i can see the absolute drop in activity in cantr. Characters who seem to have tons going on in towns now have maybe 1 or 2 actions happen from other characters.

I sugest someone from the Players department or something department should send a message to all the players ingame saying what's happening and explaining that although their characters aren't highlithed there are still things going on. Players shouldn't discover this by themselfs, thanks :)

Honestly, I think it's pretty obvious that the characters aren't lighting up. The lack activity is not due to people being ignorant of new activity, but of a general lack of will to check every character every time they want to play. I've decreased my activity also, simply because having to check every character for new events manually burns minutes, and the MYSQL errors are really annoying to look at.

Yes, I think it is unacceptable that players aren't even given a notice explaining the problem. Are any members of staff actually doing anything about this?

There are no active members left in the programming department.
