Reclaiming Broken Locks

Postby dingo » Wed Jul 23, 2008 3:18 am

I did post this suggestion in the Melting down old keys topic, but it got moved to Implemented so I'll repost if thats OK

If you break a lock. You could receive a broken lock object that can then be melted down to reclaim iron. With the keys 10 grams being reclaimed is fine but with the lock since it takes substantially more iron there should perhaps be a slight loss to the amount of reclaimed iron due to "rust" or something.

It shouldnt matter which side your on since I guess the lock is technically visible from both sides or else how do you stick in the key.

lol Sounds great. Although it might lead into people stealing other people's locks to get iron for their own lock, but... actually that's rather cool.

Well, you already lose some since 10 grams of the 180 grams is for the key. And then with it all broken and stuff, maybe you should only get a hundred grams back. But after a while, an easy way to fund a pirate ship.

It would make pirate attacks all the more serious, because it would mean that if they had time they would break every lock they could haha... But of course that makes them more vulnerable... it just depends on how greedy they are.

I like the idea. Perhaps taking down machines and scrapping vehicles for their materials is also a good idea.

I can see it now....an army comes into a town, kills a big part of the population, but some manage to run away and then come back 5 years later and see their town completely decimated.

Add in the idea of destroying buildings and Cantr will take a serious step in the direction of realism.

All that's been discussed before, and i think it was decided that it would be too much of a nuissance.

I like the idea, but there is a problem: and the wooden locks? I mean, small vehicles and ships have locks, but from wood. So, only building locks should have the possibility to be reclaimed. There is a difference at the code between vehicle and building locks?

Oh, some people might start building longboats and dinghies to produce iron out of thin air! There's a problem.

Dude, looting a town and even stealing the locks is kinda... low.

Though, you know, romans used to steal the stone from whole buildings.

Maybe then all boats should either require some extra iron or this will have ot wait for wooden locks. Then all boats start with cheap wooden locks at are a lot easier to break and you don't get any wood from the broken lock.

When you wanna build a vehicle or building lock, is a different project. If there is a different object too, there will be no problem.

I was thinking for programming purposes only, wouldn't it just be a whole lot easier if when locks were broken that the lock and the keys (no matter who held the keys through-out the game,) just turned back into iron. Skipping the whole melting proccess.

I'm really really really overloaded with keys on some of my characters and some wish daily for a proccess that would let them melt down their worthless ones. But I know damn well that I don't have the time to sort through 1000's of keys just to figure out which ones are worthless with 5 different characters.
I hate people.

Uh, no.
A broken lock is a brocken lock, NOT 10 grams of iron; also what if you were holding the key and someone else breaks your lock? Your key just randomly turns into 10 grams of iron, yes; VERY realistic
