Do you have an axe of some kind? Check the wiki to see how things work. This particular instance is because of how the game is coded. No project shows what tools you can use to speed it up, you just have to know. Timber is the only thing that doesn't work at all with no tools, so it can be confusing by just looking at the project info. When in doubt use the wiki, that's what it's for.

It's pretty backwards that timber is the only thing that cannot be gathered by hand. It might as well be extended to gas and gems.

Gas I can sort of understand, but why gems?

depends on whether gems are commonly found lying around loose, or are extracted from rock.

Lately it looks like jewelry requirements have been leaning towards you can't do jack shit without tools, so if people couldn't get the gems in the first place without a pickaxe, they wouldn't have to worry about having piles of useless pebbles. I did suggest some primitive jewelry but I don't remember what was wrong with it.
