abrreviated activity page

Postby kroner » Sun Mar 21, 2004 10:14 pm

the page that always take the longest to load is the activity page since the server has to list out every project that's being done in the location. most of the time when i want to access the projects page it's just to resume my carrot project or whatever.
maybe a solution to all this strain on the server would be to have an abbreviated activity page that would only list projects for which your character was the initiator. the regular activity page would either link off from this or they would each have seperate buttons on the character page.
just a thought.

I like it.
It is somehow similar to the pause-resume thread, but i like it more this way.

Wouldn't it be better to sort the problem of the projects that are started and then abandoned?

The pause resume thing is good too... but wouldn't that need a bunch more programing? You could have a project going on in every town to be kept track of...

No.

When user arrives at location...
... Loop:
....... Check Activity Event (i) (Where i is the number, starting at 1 and ending at the last event)
....... If Activity Event Initiator = You
........... Add event to queue (To a max of 5)
....... End if
... Do above loop until all events are checked
Show queue items

Taadaa. Of course it's more code than that, but that's the general gist - really. I don't know how the code is set up with activities, but otherwise, this might work.

All I want is a "Resume last project". It's very annoyingt and time consuming to stop the project you're working on to store something in a building or whatever makes you need to stop the current project. 's gonna save me at least 10 minutes per day. :D

It would be less effort to have the activities page work something like the events page.

Clicking on the activities button would show you only the list of what you had started.

Then there would be buttons at the bottom like the event screen has "Show further back" and "Show All"

These button would say "Show Active" and "Show Inactive".

A queue is more effort but still a good idea.

Automatically switching projects when you start another would be somewhere in between.

I'm not saying what will be done.
Just thinking about it a little.

What do you think if...

The deafault "Show what you started" only displays your name at the top instead of next to each project?

Also having a button off of the people page where you could clik to see what projects a single character started.

"Show Active" shows all the participants under the name of the project but not who started it. You would have to click the (i) more info button to see that. This would give you a feel of the groups of people working together.

"Show All" would just show a list of project names not who worked on them.

Again I am not saying that this is the plan.
I am just thinking of how it would look specifically.

Wouldn't that use more bandwidth? It loads the Activity page of just your projects, then you'd need to click another button to see them all. So really, instead of just loading the entire page once, you're loading the entire page AND a half (Half being the page with just your initiation)?

Of course, you don't always need to work on a project of someone else. So I guess it would be an OVERALL cut down on bandwidth.

Plus, here's another idea to cut down. When you use material on a project, it should check to see if it's all there and if you have the tools. If so, it should start it automatically. One less trip to the Activities page.
