Suggestion for Implementing
After the creation of drying racks and smokers being changed, and now drying dung being changed, I have reached a conclusion that having us find out by our own is a little unfair, because we could planning somethjing out four a journey or perhaps. I suggest this:
That before something is implemented, to should be entered into the Aceepted Thread so that we can all know it is coming, and upon it being implemented it can be moved to the Implemented Thread. This will just help us prepare for the coming change.
Please, I feel no downside to this, for it is just a suggestiong for a simple post of two.

Big new changes, such as the implementation of fuel for vehicles, are always discussed in the forum. Changes to projects on existing machines never have been, though many are inspired by suggestions from players.

I agree it should be announced in-game. A lot of players don't check the forums often (or ever). You can't miss it when you log into the game and there is an announcement in the messages section. Every little change wouldn't have to be announced this way, but big changes (ie: changing the consumption rates of food) would be a good idea.

Okay, perhaps then a message is sent to the players in a pm over the game.
See, one of my characters had just started a smoked meat project when the change was made, while having a pot to make cooked meat, because smoked meat was easier. My character started to run out quickly after the change, and recently had to stop to make more food. If there is a pm telling the players when such a change is to be made, people could better prepare.

Certain things, yes, they're more fun to find out in game. Things that have been the same for years that are suddenly drastically changed, no. There's no need to cause people to freak out when their character starts eating twice as much food as before. Last time that they changed most food values, they informed the players ahead of time, i.e. when potatoes were changed from 100-200g a day.
If you think that things that are set in the wiki shouldn't be announced as changing (especially radical changes) or even discussed to find out how players feel on it, then we might as well go back to the FOIG rule and get rid of the wiki and any other information sources right now and stop talking about anything in the game and how it functions.

If they're that drastic, they need to be discussed or at least acknowledged as coming soon.
They also need to be discussed within the whole RD department on the forums before implementation.

The recent changes to the drying rack and smoker projects were nothing like what happened when every resource in the ground had eating and harvesting rates adjusted. Of course there would be notification of such a thing, now as always.
Meat is still available for all chars, and there are other ways to prepare it. It's true that many people relied on the absurdly scaled efficiency found in jerky and smoked meat before, which has been discussed in this forum for a long time, and was indeed the motivation for this change.

And still I found out in game and I even managed to survive!!!
The changes are fair and balance things, like it or not. You wanna rant for the pleasure of it? Go ahead. I won't. You know me: Cantr has always been a WYSIWYG game for me and I enjoy every minute of it.

No one is saying the changes are unfair or unbalanced (at least not in this thread). I don't think dung drying is so imperative that an in-game announcement would be needed, but I do think that any change to food consumption rates should be. That is something that can have a life/death impact (for example: someone plans to be away for several days and stocks enough food on their char to last till they return). In the food scenario, you also prevent people freaking out thinking all their chars have the eating sickness because the amount eaten per day was changed.

I think players should have some idea about the background mechanics and any changes thereto, but characters should have to find out in game.
Newspawns by definition should be fairly clueless, but players like to know what's going on even when they RP ignorance. Players shouldn't feel overwhelmed or bewildered by the game, but when they're not informed they probably do.
This is why I've always liked the idea of an Update article in the webzine, to inform us about new changes and future plans.
