Salt is not cheap and can not be gathered in large quantities quickly.

Plus, salt is pretty rare. But please, keep the smoked fish, dried fish, salted meat, grilled meat, and cooked meat the same. Otherwise, food will be really hard to get enough of.
When you hope for something, you often believe in something. When you believe in something, you often have pride in it. Being proud often leads to a hating of some group.

it doesnt take much salt to make a good amount of food, and at 250 grams a day, its a good thing to gather, but the salting barrel should change to keep things fair.

Shouldn't this be in suggestions?

I am going to have to protest this, of course, I'm biased because one of my characters controls a town who lives off of salted meat. But still, salt is difficult to gather, since no tools can be used to increase the gathering rate.

Salt, and it's benefits, can also travel far. Just 10000 grams of the stuff can churn out a lot of salted meat, so even a town far away from a source of salt can make salted meat, so long as their is some trading going on in the region.

We're pondering salting barrels, yes. Slower, but automatic with assistance is one possibility we're discussing.

Slower but automatic? You mean like the 20 grams of salted meat per day will stay, but you won't be able to make 350 grams in one day anymore? It will be smaller than that? And it will be automatic with manual option?
