Lag is probly costing us quite a few newer players.
If cantr could come up with a way to make 1000 dollars off of it's player you could buy a server that would hold 1000 people at once with no lag I know a candian company that sells refurbs you could get something pretty nice i'd imagine but every time a mention money people freak out around here *ducks and hides*

Yes, you could make $1,000's off selling game minutes or increased project productivity(projects complete 10% faster) etc. but then you create a game of haves and have nots. which causes, major game balance issues... which in turn, turns away new players.

What is really needed here is time and money, neither which seem to be in great supply.

What you need is an angel donor.... deep pockets and an addiction to Cantr.

The forum could be decoupled from the Cantr game server without spending any money. There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of free forum hosting services. Most of them use phpBB (as this forum does), so there is probably an automated way to transfer existing posts from one server to another.

*If* $1000 is all it takes to fix it - and I'm sure there must be doubt - well... there must be 200 regular players. That's only an extra $5 a piece above what donations they're already making. An appeal via PM to all players might do it.

And, of course, anyone reading this who's thought of contributing, or increasing their donations... don't just think about it, *Do* it.

Does Cantr have the sceduled downtime anymore? At least I haven't noticed it. If some processes that happen daily would happen during a scheduled downtime then queries from players couldn't cram the system. Although we also have processes that run several times a day...

Hmm, well can't you just prevent players from logging in like they do in KoL?

To answer some points made above:

- Yes, Cantr runs on a dedicated server, no shared hosting
- Yes, moving the forum does not come at an extra cost: as I said, we already have the server. And we already use phpBB ;-) It's the time that's lacking.
- No, $1000 would not fix our problems: hosting is not a one-off payment, but continuous - we pay about $100 monthly right now (and we have a pretty good server). So it would only help us for 10 months. Besides, the real problem is time: if we rented a second server, we still need to redo a lot of the code to be able to deal with this .... that said, $1000 could be enough to pay a programmer for a bit and have some of the dirty work done we don't get to :-)
- I find the idea of a downtime somewhat appealing actually - it's an ugly fix, but if it does turn out to help, it might be a good temporary fix. Especially because of the seriously problematic effect of the lag on new players (who might be impatient and leave quickly). We have many processes running several times a day, though - a downtime every three hours would be rather painful.

Almost all online games I know have downtime during which various resource-heavy processes, housekeeping and other functions run. Even commercial ones. It comes as standard.

I know many of Cantr's processes aren't synchronised - but would it not help, at least temporarily, to have lots of little downtimes. Everytime big processes need to run, just lock down the server?

Marol published a schedule of when the processes run. Unfortunately, the times are not easy to remember. If processes would run at the top of every hour, and at no other time, then we could anticipate and avoid lag easily.

i was attracted to this topic because of it's title. i didn't know that the title meant " WE CAN'T PLAY SO WE ARE PISSED OFF ". :(

when stuff like this happens you gotta remember that other people are also having this problem so it's not like your missing much. yes it is annoying but the staff does what it can. i have to agree with rconley. posting subjects like this only insults the people who are working hard to get the problem fixed. i think this subject should be deleted. it's old anyway.

Could you PM me with a list of server specs? You know, memory, HDD space, processor speed, etc.

So he can hack the server, take control of Cantr, and make his character a God of Death.

Because I know a bit about computers, I may be able to solve the lag problem at least.

Oh and I can't hack the server without the IP address.
