Yes, Dwarf Fortress offers amazing gameplay, it's just really difficult to get the hang of things at first. Consequently, it will probably remain forever niche. Reminds me of Cantr in a way, although the focus of the game is completely different.

I just updated and started playing again a couple days ago. I must say z levels are a big improvement. Though I have to rethink some strategies and learn new ways. Their wiki is all of a sudden pretty outdated as well.
