Hey, this would be great for Cantr Radio. We could play music created in Cantr. Music By Cantrians, for Cantrians!

Yeah, I know. But if we ever have actual music in Cantr, not just instruments (which, by the way, I don't really think will ever happen), it would be nice to put it on Cantr Radio, which seems to have a good possibility of getting set up.

ok... why dont we think about this another way. I am NOT saying I want to have sounds coming from the computer, I am saying I want people to ROLL PLAY the damn stuff. People already ROLL PLAY singing so why not allow people to create drums and such so they can visibly carry them, like wearing clothes. then said people can ROLL PLAY the music. If people can roll play sex, they can certainly put on concerts at the town hall.

Do you get me? I hate sites with music playing, it causes lag on my oh so slow computer. i would never listen to Cantr music. I would however, have a characture make some drums and pipes and put on concerts.

@Psycho Pixie: Yes, I hate background music too. But if a system was devised so that characters could make music . . . that would be cool, and that's what I thought you were getting at. If you gave a musical instrument buttons for "A" through "F," then characters could use them to play melodies.

You see Taowyn play a middle C on a lyre.

You see Taowyn play a B-flat on a lyre.

That sort of thing. It could be done. Adding a way to play a beat would be a problem, as Cantr doesn't seem to timestamp events beyond the day and hour of the event.

I was just thinking that music doesn't have to be audiable. It could be like a repair-type project where you select how many hours you wish to play for.

"You see a man in his twenties play a guitar"
"man in his twenties: *Sings as he's playing* I can't sing my lord, i wish i had a gourd, me i'm not so bored, but the music is assured"
"You see a man in his twenties stop playing a guitar"

Even making the instruments can't be that difficult.
Drum = Hide, tortoise shell, knife, string
Guitar = wood, sinew, knife
Xylophone = wood, rubber, hammer
etc..

If the applet suggested early can't be used, why not to use MIDI? Almost everyone could listen midi in his PC, and I like to compose on MIDI format.

The chars could play a song if he have the MIDI (a note on his inventary with a link, as the images, that would be uploaded to the server through the player's dpt. for avoiding copyrights violations lol) and one instrument, and the other chars in the same place could listen the song clicking on the link appeared in "you see Kabong playing a melody with a the guitar" (and if the player has speakers and so on).

PS: copyright, the right to copy everything.

The code of introducing music into Cantr was written and finished a couple of weeks ago . ProgD have passed the baton to the Resource Department to design some musical instruments.

The implementation has deliberately kept very simple and is similar to your suggestion.

A new "play this instrument" button appears next to any musical instrument in the character's inventory.

Clicking on this button generates a musical event - this is seen as
"You play a <name of musical instrument" by the active character.

Others in the same location see an event like "You see <dynamic name of active character> play a <name of musical instrument>"

This currently only works with musical instruments in a character's inventory (and therefore carriable) . Larger instruments such as grand pianos, large temple gongs, kettle drums and cinema organs will have to wait a little while.

Any musical skills?

You see a man in his thirties awkwardly playing the flute

You see a woman in her fifties skillfully attack a man in his thirties...

Well speaking as someone with no musical ability at all I'm glad its going to work that way.
Least I get the chance to role play being a great musician.

There are no plans to have musical skills, the implementation has been kept simple so that it is essentially an RP device
