Watch/Guard Towers a building/vehicle suggestion

Postby SwimFan » Sun Oct 21, 2007 6:51 pm

Fighting from a vehicle offers some tactical advantage. Mainly, you can't me dragged out of it if it's locked the people don't have the key. You also have the disadvantage of not seeing people come and go in the location...

It is considered an exploit to fight from a landlocked ship, however.

So maybe we could make watch towers? Big, tall wooden buildings (maybe require rope as well to build) That would effectively act as landlocked vehicles in that you can see the actions of the town and strike from them, and you can't get dragged out unless it's unlocked or the people have the key.

Perhaps it could be a little bit different from just an immobile vehicle in that you would be able to see when people are entering/leaving the location and going in and out of buildings.

I like it! Do you think these amounts of resorces are realistic?
1000 grams of wood
10000 grams of stone
1000 grams of medium rope
15 days to build
Does this sound realistic?

Maybe we should be able to build wooden, stone and brick watch towers?

We could, that would make sense, I suppose. Or maybe brick and stone watch towers should require a quantity of wood? I don't think 1k of wood is enough, maybe 2-5 kilos?

How would this change the way people fight in the game? Would it make the combat system unfair?

It would make some assaults harder to perpetrate. It would make it hard just to drag everyone into a locked room.

Disadvantages? Perhaps no machinery could be built in it. This is not a replacement for traditional buildings. There is no privacy, for one. Maybe anything that could be built in a vehicle could be build inside it, but no big machines that can only be built in buildings.

And obviously you can't use hand-to-hand weapons from a tower, if there is a distinction between hand-to-hand and long-range weapons.

Well if it was classified as a vehicle, particularly a road vehicle with no allowed road types it could travel on, then it would automatically inherit all the limitations of other vehicles.

And if you want to make it high-tech, use logs instead of plain wood.

*cough* add the ability to put these inside of buildings, and call them BALCONIES! OMG THAT WOULD ROCK! but how to make it so it looks outside and is connected to the building? *shrug*

A disadvantage could be an extremely limited space, allowing only one or two people in it at a time?

Why not make a small cart and call it 'guard tower'?

becaus that would be stupid!

.....

anyway, we should be able to build guard towers and balconies on buidings, and I think that maby having guard towers having a more than 1 person size, but be more expencive than any smaller vehicle, but less expencive than building a boat there would be beneficial. also, having it have a longer looking abiltiy thing, like with the telescope (at least i've heard rumours that the telescome longates your vision perspective thing) would be cool too!

plus, it will help people visualise it being a "guard tower" 'caus it would just be weird to see "you see "guard tower" arriving from x path"

so THAT'S WHY!

A few points I need to make

-People can no longer make landlocked boats (though the old ones have not been removed)
-Buildings and vehicles cannot improve sight with current code
-There is no way to allow people in buildings or vehicles to see people entering and leaving with current code
-There is no distinction between missile and mêlée weapons

It is quite possible to make immobile vehicles, but adding more then that would likely doom it to the bottom of the long list of suggestions, even if accepted (since it would require new code).

I don't see these types of structures as being of high tactical importance. During a fight, warriors will want to be inside of normal buildings to hide from enemy attacks. There are a few limited situations where it would be helpful, but I don't anticipate people would really use them. The only time you see guards on vehicles now, is when they are asleep and forget to get off after arriving in town.

I like the idea, but it only makes sense if you could use distance weapons only.

I know that implementing difference between melee and distance weapons would be hard, but this can give a very good boost in the battle system. Otherwise, no one would make a bow, ever.

Who told you that? If programming chooses not to remove artifacts like this from the game, they can be used freely. To expect otherwise would be unreasonable. I've seen landlocked ships frequently used as public prisons, for example.

Anyway, the only benefit of the guard tower as proposed would be the inability to be dragged, which can already be accomplished by dragging yourself, so I see very little point to this.

maybe a place from where you can only hit people outside with bows, and also be hitted by them this way. just like in real life.
