I'd highlight in yellow the character names of the new accounts, so people can be a little bit gentler with them.

I 've shared often a jail with newbie players and I can bet it wasn't a pleasant experience for them till someone realized they were clueless.

Characters on this island will eat time (play time)? Better when not, because experienced players can spend more time to learn newbies...

I've linked this elsewhere but I figured I'd say it wherever applicable. I've made a myspace cantr help desk. here it is:

message with questions/suggestions...

I would especially love to upload tutorial videos

If you allow experianced players to play on this newbie island you'd wanna make sure it's someone that can be trusted. You don't want a newbie starting off with a dictator giving them all this false information about life.

Agreed. To solve that problem, you could just have people from the Player's Department play there, then.

but.. that is not in the job description for them.. what you do is start up a new branch of staff. with applications and everything.. you'd call them something "Help department"

I'm brand new to the game, I've only been playing a few days. I'd say that the best thing to do in order to keep new spawns around is to have someone that could answer their questions for them. A friend introduced me to this game and I would have never been able to figure this stuff out (as quick as I did) without constantly asking her for help.

The first thing she told me about it was that if I pick up anything off the ground, that I'd be killed. After a bit (a lot) of explanation, I now know my way around the game or at least I now know how to find things out. I'm still learning though, and still lost most of the time.

People in the chatroom are usually ready to help but newbies are often so damn eager that they don't stop to listen. "What kind of a game is this?" is a very wide question, and when people start talking about Runescape you can tell that they might have a hard time learning to enjoy Cantr. We should have a FAQ with real frequently asked questions and not just bug related stuff.

I think that's a great idea. The tutorial island sounds good too, but I would guess that the hilighting could be implemented easily and quickly. It would allow the whole player community to be involved in helping newbies learn the ropes.

No, that has been suggested before to mark chars of new players differently but that would be crossing the CR. New player's characters shouldn't be treated differently. I'd rather have the island thing because there it could be okay. But not in the main game. A mass murderer that kills all newspawns in his location shouldn't have to feel obligated to spare a new player's newspawn just because it's a new player. The character wouldn't know that.

Just leave it open to all staff that want to do it. There are tons of departments already, and I don't see the need in making yet another one, nor a reason to limit it to the PD.

Movie - would be a good thing, propably easier way to learn for newbies than reading, but I have difficulties imagining how it should look like...?
Maybe something like 'first days of a newspawn', all the main things fited into few minutes tutorial (what should be done and why - checking notes, laws, interactions, geting food, etc, with a comment)?

Different color for new players' charries - AGAINST, becouse of the CR

Newbie Island - FOR
Although I can't call myself a veteran, I think I've learned a bit about Cantr already, and I'd be happy to help as much as I could... maybe it's some kind of unfulfilled maternal instinct?

I like Newbie Island. I'd be willing to work the help desk. To get off, you have to gather some materials and build a boat and sail off to a random spawn location.

In Cantr everyone starts out with equal equipment = none. If people were allowed to start on an island where everything is easier, short distances, all the basic resources are readily available and you won't get killed for being silly, it wouldn't be fair towards others if newbies were allowed to sail into other realms keeping the equipment they'd made on the island.

like the newbie isle idea!! But no sailling of there, you just born, learn, die, reborn out of the island and "forget" the newbie island. It would be very sad for me to see a 20 year char with a steel long sword and a boat and bla bla bla
