Do we need so many thieves?

Postby Proudmonkey » Fri Sep 21, 2007 4:50 pm

Maybe there's something to be said about real life people and real life society if we have society simulator that's apparently full of thieves. It seems several of my characaters have it mentioned in their presence at least once a day. So much so that it seems most cities in the game are just plain paranoid over it. What I'm wondering is, is it necessary for so many characters to make a conscience decision to be a thief so that they run rampant throughtout cantr. I've already learned that by joining the right company or organization in pretty well any town you are going to get iron equipment much quicker than by trying to steal it. So maybe its just a thrill to get from stealing even useless stuff.

Just another random thought from me.

It's not a lot of long term players that have thieves. It's mostly either new people that don't know better or people trying to get a char they don't like (for whatever reason, a bad skill or strength) killed quickly. I don't even consider them thieves hardly, it's so common. A real thief would work its way into society and case a place before they'd make a move.

Yep. Anti-Theft laws are everywhere because you have to remind new players that cantr is different from all the other games out there. In other games, stuff on the ground is meant to be picked up. They fail to realize, a lot of the time, that cantr societies actually have laws, and that the laws are created and enforced by other players in the game. ;)

Honestly, I haven't seen a thief in a really, really long time. It's nothing like it used to be.
(On this note, anyone that kills off a character because of a poor skillset should go and die along with it. I hate when people do that.)

It's near-impossible to be a thief in Cantr. I've found that most Cantr-thieves are suicidal.

Annoyingly common are the thefts everyone can see - running from building to building and then high tailing it out of town

The better played out thefts are when no one notices they've had valuable things stolen from them.. until years after (boats in harbors.. iron/steel in locked rooms)

so -maybe- you don't see any well done thefts because you don't notice them being done?

I've noticed in-game that if you or someone else leaves stuff in an unlocked building then it will get stolen, provided that there's no one watching it. People (save for newspawns) won't steal if there's witnesses but if no one's there they most likely think "if I won't take this stuff then the next person will anyway". Also people with crowbars are likely to break into anything if there's no people around. There's lots of boats floating out there, most of them are empty. So people get a dinghy and a crowbar, crack in and maybe take the boat along if they have a ship to dock it into. There's not really a market for longboats since the only people to want one are newspawns and other people who couldn't pay anything worth replacing the lock, while people who already have iron are more interested in sloops and better. Since there's no limit to how many boats can be docked to a ship and the weight effect is not very notable, people can have a whole collection of smaller boats they don't actually need but couldn't leave behind either because someone else might take them.

we are greedy and it shows through are characters. What's sad is when a charrie steals stuff from right infront of people and nothing is done *laughs about more than one of his charries*

I have a very good thief. A small town a stupid newspawn steals some usefull stuff my char thinks " this is the time" and says everyone follow him and capture him! My char was first to leave turned back the only other active man on the town continues following the thief. I get to the sleepy town get in all buildings steal everything!( even steel sabres 8) )
And leave with 14kg on me! xD Still laughing of the idiot that must be looking for me!

So it is possible to be a good thief... u just need to be very lucky.

lol That's a good one. In big towns it often happens that people die indoors and drop stuff, but no one knows they are dead because people have this "do not enter other people's buildings without being invited" rule stuck in their minds ever since they were newspawns. Every once in a while a town official might run through the buildings and corpses are usually found, as well as items. But if the town doesn't have officials then no one knows who's supposed to take care of stuff like that. Now that buildings can be renamed, I'd like to see more people buying the old ones rather than building them from scratch.

I have to disagree on this......get too many attached and your ship will sail slower than a dinghy. (and I'm talking only three boats attached) Okay, so being filled to the rafters with resources doesn't help either, but adding the boats did make a difference.

I agreee, the weight is definitely noticeable, if not of the boats, of cargo and people. A handful of people docking dinghies to a sloop can stop it dead in the water. And of course any limit placed on the number of boats than can be docked to one another could render any ship undockable, or rather, invincible.

I guess a sloop is a whole 'nother case compared to a raker or a galleon. And the weight of even a single a passenger seems to have a noticeable effect on rakers even though it cannot be seen from the wake, travelling a certain distance takes longer if there's more passengers.

Meh, there aren't enough real thieves around. Beyond certain point it gets boring to be a successful thief without enough corrupt characters to bribe.

When a rogue character shows some witness and charisma, all characters around seem to increase their intelligence and refuse to be lured. That would be a trait of a real thief, but when everybody in game acts in a skeptic way, like knowing always that sleeping sickness isn't a real sickness, it gets a litte pointless.

So, to be a thief in cantr you should avoid roleplaying a rogue character, because almost nobody will buy it.

(PD: Yes, they killed my thief )

Indeed it sucks that people are not ready to get fooled, everyone tends to be wary. Also if you play your character intentionally stupid then of course you never run into people who would abuse this. You might know my character Seko is really into ladies, he's not very smart but when he sees a good pair of boobies he loses the last bit of intelligence he has. This one time he was travelling and ended up in this town that has a whorehouse. I think he mentioned carrying some resources, something that could be valuable but he wouldn't realize it's value. He easily could've been tricked into paying a lot just to get close to a pretty lady but nobody tried to con him. Maybe it's because of that nose digging but hey, it's rarely the attractive people who need hookers.
