Seagulls
My character set of from kishikanatos a while back with the intent iof just sailing and sailing, hed didn't know where he was going or when he was going to get there.
I think you should have seaguls enter your boat when your near land so sailors like mine know there getting close to land.

Although I like the idea of seagulls - it'd be nice to have a bird to take a potshot at while going down the coast
Wrong.... You see seagulls (And pcs of driftwood, weed etc) long before you reach land IRL.
And the damn beasts are all over ships, whitening the decks, lazy basterds. It'd be easy to shoot them.

perhap's with the seamap the area you can see whould depend on the type of boat you have. the taller the mast ou can climb to look out from the more area you can see.many warship's hunting illegal cargoe's used to sit "under" the horizon with the top sail's hauled up so that they could see the other ship's without being seen themselves because of there different mast height's. maybe a similiar thing could be brought into cantr. or have a take a look optoin where you could climb a mast to get this better veiw but if the only perso on oard the boat stop's moving while your doing it ?
and as to shooting birds from planes that's going a bit off topic from having seagull's to help tell when your close to land

i think it was columbas that stopped his crew from going to mutiny because of floating drift wood that was seen from there ship's letting his sailor's know that land wasn't far off
