But I agree with Seko, marriage is just an OoC term that's used for clarity on the player's behalf. Marriage in Cantr is (usually) an expression of love, or a ploy used for personal gain.

I've witnessed many marriages all over Cantr, but so far I've only had one character come close. Unfortunately they died a little while before their wedding day...

As far as I'm concerned its like iron age (since theres iron in the game) and marriages are not only Christian domain, many religions have it, also primitive religions and cultures. And well... In today world its more social then religious event to the majority of people.

I'd agree that Iron is the flow of the game, but there's Iron in real life today? ..and We're not in the Iron Age. We have Cars in-game, that's why I'm saying it doesn't conform to an Era.
Besides, you saying that 'many religions have it' does not help your case, in fact it helps mine. You're just emphasising that it's an ideal held by religions out of game.
So then I ask what the difference between having a character who sells 'Marriage Packages' where you get the marriage essentials, and a character who starts a Nazi Regime (still an ideal) or to be even more blunt, a character who stats Christianity?

I don't have a side in this discussion
I'd also feel better if there were no marriages, but there are, and it is not a big deal. There's a marriage in every religion and thats because its a social event, so if there were no religion most of people would 'marry someone' anyways.
I'm an atheist, but I plan to take a civil marriage and make some party afterwards because I guess Id just want to show the world that I care or whatsover...
What I'm trying to say is that marriage don't have to refer to any religion.
I just can't discuss so swiftly in English yet so pardon me, but I can't explain it other way

Marriage is also a secular institution, granting legal rights to spouses.
As far as a town is concerned, the secular element is the only important element to the marriage. Of course, any references to oog religious references should be frowned upon. The easiest way around this is to write it into their laws exactly what a marriage is and what legal benefits it provides to spouses.
I don't think vows or exchanges of objects are necessarily out of game influences. Humans have a flair for the dramatic and the romantic, and oaths and commitment objects fall into both of those categories. I'm sure there are atheists that still use rings and say (secular) vows. It's just something hard-wired into our psyche, and as such will be hard-wired into our characters.

I have one that exchanged promises, infront of thier peers and called it a union.... they combined thier last names they are still together after about 40 years... and still say mushy things...
I have another... they each expressed feelings for each other, promises to be faithful.. he gave her diamond earings, she gave him a turtoise shell ring...she took his last name....alone on his ship... they also are still together about 45 years.. even if he too has slept through most of it.
Had one make public decloration... they called it a wedding...she took his name... he has long since died.
Had one asked to be partner in life... took his name... no real ceremoy.. romantic yes, but casual... still together... ummm 30 years.. and he has slept through most of it?
There are many to bring 2 lives as one...
I have one that has a partner... they have always been together... but never hd a ceremony ..though they are together.... and faithful... they each have their own names...
Had one, where one day, she just introduced herself using mines last name...and ever since... she has slept basically...
.((... this is not encouraging at all :S how pathetic... I make them all sleep >.< ))

There is nothing wrong with marriage in game. Marriage is at it simplest
a union of two people.
And comeon. If you think about it everything in game has come from out of game. I said it in http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 172#268172. Second page.
Just as long as nothing gets too specific.
The religion thing is what pisses me off. I have seen more than a few religions that are based from christianity. I am an atheist, but my characters do not know what an atheist is, let alone what religion is. I will stop here. That is something that does not need to be spoken of here.

Who made the first Cantr kill? How did they get the idea to kill?
Characters do not know of anything out of game, but how did the first
character to kill get that idea to kill a person or an animal? How did characters get the idea to mine for iron, gather cotton...
Well you get the idea.

That kinda stuff I have prolems with... so..
What about two tribes men agreeing that 3 goats and 1 cow to be an acceptable gift for the father of the bride to give for his daughters hand in "marriage/union"?
There have been "rings* promises longer than christianity has been around.
"Now you may kiss the bride."
Yea that should not be.

Oh so using your logic, it's okay to RP stuff that predates Christianity? That's pretty dumb.

I agree. Dumb as stated.
Things in game should naturally evolve.
There are few if any in game events that could elvove into religion.
I must apologize. I am biased in the religion field.
I am an atheist.
That is the only thing that I can not seperate between my characters and myself.

SOrry, I'm gonna have to take a tangent here.Doug R. wrote:Marriage is also a secular institution, granting legal rights to spouses.
Marriage is really not secular. Sure, people can have a civil ceremony and become 'married' with no hint of religion.
But the roots of marriage, and, more importantly, the boundaries of what constitutes a marriage are religious.
I don't see many same-sex couple getting formally married, in the eyes of the law, let alone God...
Personally, I would never get married, civil or not. Until Civil partnerships are available for all, and the field is even and secular, then I won't be registering any relationship.
Anyways, like I said, tangental...
As for Cantr, 'marriages' or their equivalent are always much, much more enjoyable if it is done with imagination and originality, rather than the blatant rip-offs of Christian ceremonies which are seen too often...

Well it is human instinct... most of the time, I guess. Although Cantrians are not humans... soooo.... thats kinda OOC influence. Although, almost everybody follows it, but I have one character not influenced by that...

I was married in a storage room
mine was a blood bond in a storage room alone with my husband. It was just for us and no one else matters. I have also made a will for when I die that I carry on me.
