K-isle: Buffalo or Bison

Postby Doug R. » Tue Jul 24, 2007 8:04 pm

I've decided to start with Noniwrok as my first test island for the new distribution system (it's small and densely populated, and I'm familiar with it). The term buffalo tends to encompass a wide variety of animals, and in North America refers to the Bison. Bison and buffalo are very different animals in appearance.

In order to broaden the species, I want to know what the majority of K-isle dwellers think of when they see "Buffalo" on K-isle?

I know of at least one note that has a drawing of a Bison in it, and that's what I'm assuming most people think of.

Bison. And this question came up with translation as well. 'Buffalo' comes out like 'water buffalo' for a lot of people. The word 'bison' avoids this ambiguity, no matter which north american species you think they should look like. There should be an old thread on it, Doug.

Why don't you start with an island that has a real problem you can solve, instead of doting on your favourites? This is insulting to people whose chars are still suffering either from frequent attacks or, worse, from lack of resources necessary to thrive.

Bison is what I think of... but I'm preferential to the term buffalo, especially if it encompasses a wider range. I live where the buffalo (bison) roam (at least they do quite profusely on the wildlife refuge), so I guess that's why I'm preferential to it as the term used. And I don't really think the term should be changed after so long...

Sanchez, he stated why he was starting on Noniwrok. It's smaller and probably a better spot to start testing his ideas, whether it's a favorite of his or not. Less room for a lot of repercussions just yet.

'Buffalo' is already translated as 'bison' was my point. And there are small inhabited islands with no animals.

But it's an island he knows well... It's best to start with something small and familiar when your experimenting with something new.

If buffalo is already translated at "bison" in the other languages, then this whole thread is moot. I'll put the distinction in the wiki.

Ah, it is? Well I still see them as buffalo. Are you going to change the name of them for English then? I really hope not, I like it the way it is.

Buffalo will = Bison, but I won't change the name, since I can't because of the translations. The other kinds of buffalo will be introduced on other islands as Cape-Buffalo, Water-Buffalo, and Wiznet.

As I said, I'll just make a note in the wiki that Buffalo = Bison (because that's how it was translated in the other languages).

I think it was interpreted to mean the animal known commonly as 'American Buffalo', which is a Bison.

I picture bison, but prefer the name buffalo.

Ever see a big bison bull up close? Of any animal I have ever been near, them damn bison scare me.
I helped my brother on a bison ranch for less than a day.

Bison scare me, but they sure do taste good. What I ate was 100% grass fed and no antibotics or hormones.
That's good eats. *drools*And the burgers.
I am making myself hungry now so I am done.

Don't you think that shouldn't really be a problem? Everyone relates "bison" to the word "buffalo" anyways. Can't character's use slang-is synonyms, just like we do?

You don't always have to use the exact word that's programmed into the game. That creates a monotonous environment.

It's bad enough that 90% of the cantr world's population only uses "drag" and "hit" for the two word's respective actions.

... Which also means it would be sort of an unnecessary change to switch buffalo to bison in the first place. Heh, funny how things can go when you think as you type. ;)
