Animals Critical to Culture/Survival

Postby Doug R. » Thu Jul 19, 2007 10:24 pm

All,

Sometime in the future, I'll begin the process of adding new species and removing existing species from some islands. The reason for this is that the fewer islands that each species occupies, the easier it will be to track their populations. I'm hoping to cut each species down to 1-3 islands each, (and if more than one, the islands will be similarly populated by characters.)

In order to facilitate this, I need to know what animals have made a mark on the culture of the island that your characters live on, and also if there are any animals on your island that are absolutely critical to survival.

For example, K-isle wouldn't be K-isle without its buffalo.

As for extinct species (Akypor rhinos, MacGregor lions, K-isle Pelicans, etc), my question is, do you want them back? Also, K-islanders, do you want any predators? (I'm leaning towards no).

For those of you ready to panic, don't worry. Anything I remove will be replaced with something else semi-equivalent. I know horses are often the only source of food in forests, but horses lead the animals as the most wide-spread,, and I'm honestly sick of working with them. My long-term goal is to tackle one island at a time, and provide each island with at least two animals per terrain type. Bottlenecked regions, like the forests on Treefeather, will get unique species (similar to isolated regions in RL, like the galapagos) adding to diversity.

I really need to know, because I don't want people screaming at me when I take away your favorite animal. Making interesting ecosystems on each of many islands will take considerable time and effort, and by the time I'm actually implementing it, it'll be too late, so I need to hear from you now.

I'm also welcoming suggestions for replacements on your island. If I'm allowed, I'll post of list of animals that will be affected by this change so you can make useful suggestions for alternatives.

I would greatly appreciate it if those of you that are bi or multi lingual to translate the gist of this into your other language and let your friends know. I'm really handicapped when it comes to the non-English islands. Thanks.

This is not something that will be happening soon. I'm currently working on adding more cats, and then need to do small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, bears, etc, etc, etc.

Duh, table removed.

Should we put the info here or through message? Not like if there's anything amazing to reveal about the Spanish/German and the Dutch/French islands, but anyway...

Racoons around Blojt

Buffalo in Kwor (duh...)

Gorillas on Burgeo

That's it for animals which I know are recognised as important for in-game reasons.

Sheep back in Kwor would be appreciated

Unless the GAB/GAC object, I would post them here so I remember where they are. Saying pigeons are important on Inuit is useless general knowledge if you don't know where Inuit is, and if you do, then you knew that already...

(There is no Inuit)

Well will you make it possible to transport animals in ships? I think maybe that should be implemented first. Columbus allegedly brought the first cattle and horses to the Americas.

I have one char on the island that is called Gallagher in some maps I've seen with other charries (Though we who live there have a different name). Well whatever you want to call it. The Hawks are a part of our lives (albeit a nuisance), but it would be wrong to remove them.)

But I think three species is a bit limiting, I like the way that we find different animals in different terrains.

Most animals are able to live in multiple terrains, so you would have crossover that would cause more than at least two per terrain in most instances.

Domestication of animals has been an accepted suggestion for quite a while, but I don't see it being implemented any time soon (domestication allows for transport).

They have been appearing in Kwor again, in small numbers.
I have a char there that's waiting for them to grow into a strong herd so he can really get ahead in his branche of work with their wool.
Church there seems eager for that as well, as they could use the wool for the robes.

Edit:
As for bottleneck areas, Pak on Treefeather might need some animals, when I had a char there it was void of animals, due to it being a green spot locked between mountains and a lake.

Sheep in the Olipifovash area.

As for extinct species, I am torn. I would appreciate some of the species that went extinct by accident to be reintroduced (pigeons). I think it would be reasonable to reintroduce species like the rhino near Akypor that were killed off so long ago that only the oldest remember them (I think there was only 1 of them there anyway, I have seen the amount of tusk that was left from that particular rhino). The lions on the otherhand were methodically eliminated, and only fairly recently at that. I don't think that they should be reintroduced (and if you do decide to reintroduce them, make it a very small number so we can wipe them out quickly again).

Yes, yes yes, definately Lions back in MacGregor lands if possible. Also wolves, they just seem a little odd for all the laws and Myth they have, but they don't actually have any of them roaming the castle grounds or in the western hills. I guess they liked the taste of Lowlanders more and headed off to get hunted to extinction down there.
And i can't wait to have the first character to ship King Kong Gorilla's over to Kwor when they get domesticated.

I remember seeing a note about a bear in shortinazy moutains and how they battled it for a long time (lol). Anyways, I am wondering if you can reintroduce bears to the shortinazy/trover/doryiskom mountains.

Elephants of Burgeo. Harsh but impressive animals.
