Me again, sorry.
I try to have an idea for my characters before they are spawned, unfortunately in the case of my latest. The city and the character are obviously going to be a major conflict. Nothing against the city and its people, but what's the protocol for saying, I'm going to strike out on my own. Seems like i read somewhere about it being frowned upon about charries leaving a city as soon as they are spawned....any advice appreciated.
Brian

Some people tend to do it. The people in the town will look after him and say "Heh, yet another one of those who can't even bother to stick around long enough to introduce themselves". But then they move on and forget. It's not against the rules to try your luck elsewhere but it's considered bad rp'ing if you have prejudice towards a town due to being there with another character in the past, or reading about it on the forums. In your case it sounds more like that the character suspects he wouldn't fit in there.

I still havent made any definite moves with character. It's no so much a preplanned profession career goal like a sea captain in the mountains as much as it is a player who would prefer to be self sufficient and maybe a little on the evil side that is thrust into a town dominated by a 'socialistic' governement and religion. As much fun as that conflict may be for RP'ing...from the characters POV why would he want to stay someplace where he knows it won't fit in.

My new will always stick around a newspawn town if they are playing with a devious streak or a good one to their character. The good thing is your new, so any new town will be that, new to your character as is supposed to be for all new that spawn. Always read the laws and then give it a few days to actually see how they work. Some have very strict laws but it's only by living in the town a few days can you see if the people are alert and if those actual laws mean anything to them. Some you come across have been dropped by passing dead in odd towns, and it can be tricky to see if they are the actual laws, and some are very dated that you find. But don't take this as that they may not be still going. Some lands do have very old laws and ways to them which they often enforce with a vengence. Others have loads of notes and just lazy people that can't be bothered to clean up their own floors and you may as well take their laws with a pinch of salt, you will learn this along the way.
Yours will know basically in a few days if the town is lively or sleepy. Then it's up to how your char feels by assessing those around by taking a good look at what all are wearing and how good the equipment they carry looks like. If it's shiny and a lot of brand new shields and weaponry you can guarentee that they may be quiet but alert people. If they snooze carrying things in need of repair you can take it that they are lazy folk. In those cases the town is often worth sticking in because it looks like it needs some life breathing into it. If only a few are around with old looking things you know the town could be just waiting a char with sticky fingers to pick up dropped weaponry and the odd keys when the next falls dead. But if your char can't get on in a town then no one says yours has to stop. They are free to travel and explore till your hearts content.
Exploring at first can be tiresome and sometimes a little boring because some roads will take yours days to reach the next town. But thats when the fun starts in Cantr and it takes a while till it actually dawns on you how vast some of the lands may be. It's great walking into new towns with Chars and just getting a feel of the lands and people when first playing. Just because the one yours left behind was slow, boring and not very much going on, doesn't mean that the next town will be anything like that. Guarenteed there will be a town that yours walk into and your char will feel like he/she has found their ideal home. It's always worth gathering some food and resourses for trade before taking journeys. A lot of most always needed things are for iron production, plus wood and cotton, so if yours can get hold of Hematite, coal or Limestone, Bauxite Gas. things like that it's worth your chars time gathering some to take trading. Just because the town yours in has those resourses doesn't mean that the next will and you will often get a great trade for your time spent gathering. But saying that mine always grab a bit of anything they find to trade because Salt, soda, gold, rubber, healings and many other things are still very much wanted by other chars down the next road and often it's a little odd resourses that you may think yourself, well that may not be worth gathering that earns you a great shield or weapon for hunting or a little slaying even. If you take in a few towns travelling you may find that two or more towns away you will get better prices for things. Check the maps you find to see what resourses are near and make sure your have adequate food for the journey because there are some swampy mountain paths that can take a whole lot longer then a few days to travel and if yours didn't get food they will arrive very skinny. And if they don't have food in the town yours heading to, you may well starve if there is nobody there in a remote town in the mountains say to help yours with food.
A few of mine in the early days were explorers, and thats a great way to start learning the lay of the lands, and two years on in real time, mine still have plenty more towns they still have not seen and probably won't because thats how big things are in this world because it's life that draws them into sticking to a town and becoming involved. It's great to pick a travelling buddy to take some ventures with yours. Thats where fun begins and you will find it's whats happening in a town that soon draws your character into things and they soon become involved with their own lives getting built by events along the way. Just because you wanted to start a naughty char doesn't mean they will turn out that way, and vica versa with the good ones. Let life mould them into what they become because you never quite know what is going to happen around the next corner. Just as yours have dreams so do others and they will involve your chars even if you were not even looking for it to start. That may not make much sense now, but it will along the way. So your can plan as much as you like, but remember that life has a jolly good way of turning your best thought out plans upside down and sending your chars where you never even thought would happen. So enjoy the game.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent and Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect. It means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections.
