Obituaries (split from One Day)

Postby UloDeTero » Mon Jul 02, 2007 4:38 pm

Thanks to everyone who took part. The completed 'article' is now available to view in the webzine.

This will be the end of the One Day project (Unless there's an overwhelming response to do another one...)
I'll be trying to put together an Obituaries type of article, though, which will be pretty much the same (a recounting of character's lives) but with deceased characters. That'll remove any IG "Oh, I know you, I read about you in the webzine" scenarios. Plus, each biog/obituary will be a complete account of the character's life, rather than an unfinished account up to a point.

I was just wondering if it would be repeated later on. I was thinking I should take part but when the date was announced, I was just going through a phase when it felt like nothing matters because the lag is gonna kill Cantr anyway. The bits were fun to read, especially finding familiar names was fun. The problem with obituaries is that there's already a topic for "how did your characters die".

Why is an obituaries article a problem because of that thread? Not everyone who reads the Zine reads the forum or the English forum, and that thread could provide enough material for the obituaries article. No need to keep from putting an article in the Zine because there's something similar in the forum. The forum might actually have a lot of good ideas for articles in various old threads.

I guess my point was that I couldn't offer anything to the project because everyone has heard the stories of my dead charries several times already. I think more people read the forums than the webzine so the material should be something that hasn't been seen before. That doesn't rule out obituaries but should rule out stories that have already been told on the forums, unless they're exceptionally memorable.

I still don't see why even old stories should be ruled out, memorable or not (I would hope all the submissions would be somewhat memorable and interesting). Threads like that one die for months on end and new people don't see them until they either search and come across it or someone else brings it back up. I mean, it'll work either way. Just mix a few old in with the new.

This seems interesting.

I like it.

Seko, I haven't heard about your dead characters. Beside, nobody barely even knows about the lives of every character. Dead characters could have secrets they never shared. Although hopefully it won't affect things in IG. I also know some of my noninfluental characters carried secrets to the grave.

I see this working in three parts:

Biogs: These are the 'life-stories' we've already seen in One Day, but these ones will be complete. As an example, I'll edit the example I gave for One Day:
Carrie Kter spawned in Townville on day 1456. She became a hunter to help feed her town, and managed to accumulate an impressive collection of weaponry. Growing tired of a small-town life, she headed east and travelled for a number of years, doing odd jobs in the towns she visited. Eventually, she met Lee Derguy, the ruler of the large city of Sprawling. They married, and made a home together in Sprawling, where Carrie set up a successful business in weaponry and repair.
When Lee was killed in a pirate attack on day 1693, she briefly considered trying for leadership herself, but the grief was too much to bear. She sold her business to Trey Derdude for a small pickup full of potatoes and smoked meat, and headed back to Townville in despair. Once there, she found all her old friends gone, and the familiar boredom setting in, so she immediately turned back to Sprawling and begged for her business back. Trey refused to give up the business, but offered her joint-ownership instead. She accepted, and they began working together, soon becoming more than just friends.
On day 1784 they married, and spent many happy years together, running their business and travelling to nearby towns for trade and other errands. Seriously injured in another pirate attack on day 1872, she and Trey talked about moving to a safer town. However, on Trey's suggestion, they formed a guild to fight the pirate menace. They provided free weapons to all who joined, and organised the collection of materials for radios. By day 1930, the town was fully protected against pirates. However, on day 1948, a crazed newspawn somehow found some keys and locked Carrie up, hitting her every day. She fought back bravely, but had no healing foods. She finally died of her injuries on day 1953, aged just 44.

Player Tributes: These are simply comments from players about the character. Something like:
I enjoyed the RP my character had with Carrie Kter. She was a shrewd businesswoman and local legend. My character bought some weapons from her and accompanied her to Place. He was also there when Carrie was severely attacked. He gave her some onions, but had to leave soon after. I always wondered what happened to her.

Character Tributes: These are comments from characters about the character. Things your character has said or written about the character. (I'm not sure about 'made-up' things that your character didn't actually say. That wouldn't be right, I think.) Something like:
Carrie. As we lay you in the Tomb of Darkness, I recall the day we met so long ago. I bought a composite-recurve bow and you gave me a shield for free. Your goodness and kindness will be missed. Wherever you may be now, I hope it gives you comfort that your killer was captured and killed. Looking on your cold body, the victory of that campaign seems as hollow as this echoing chamber. So now we lay you to rest beside your first husband, and release you to whatever life may follow this one.

PM or email submissions to me. For tributes, please include your player or character name (ie: The name of whoever wrote it). (If you happen to know the player of the character being tributed, please ask them to submit a biog. Or I could ask them on your behalf.)
Note: Biogs should only be written by the player of the character. Both kinds of tributes, though, can be written by anyone who had contact with the character
As with One Day, I'll try to mix them up a bit, although different items about the same character will of course be grouped together.
I really hope this is even better than One Day was! It could even be a recurring feature! :D

I like this idea. *nods*

Unfortunately all my dead characters now didn't live long enough, and it's hard to remember my original batch of charries lives. =(

Come on, people! Spare a thought for the dead!

Even if your character didn't live long, if they did anything interesting we want to know!

And you're not restricted to writing about your own character, but any character that your characters have experienced the death of.
