Teletype/answering machine.

Postby Just A Bill » Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:26 am

What I would like to see is a machine that takes incoming radio messages and writes them out as a note or otherwise records the messages so that they can be heard later.

Basically I want to be able to leave the room where my radio is and be sure I don't miss a message.

Not sure entirely how they should work, perhaps the machine just has to be in the room with a radio, that way it will pick up any radio traffic in any radio in the room, or you might need to associate the machine with a specific reciever. It might make a note for each message it recieves, or make a note each hour or each day, or even allow a project that will reveal all messages since the last time the project was run. In any event the messages should have some sort of timestamp on them, so you can tell them apart. It would also be good if you could tell which message happened first if multiple message arrive in the same hour.

Not sure what you should make it of, probably the same sort of thing that a radio uses, wires, tubes ect...

This sounds to me like the sort of a problem that would be a great in-game challenge.

Hire an operator to take all the messages, coordinate with other people in town so that someone is always inside the room. Ignore the radio and get yourself into interesting situations. Those sort of solutions.

I've thought about this too. Unfortunately, MS has a point.
CLARFICATION EDIT: I like it. Really do.

I'd agree with MS - hire an operator who can stay awake...

I agree with Mafia Salad. Also this would be rather iffy in terms of realism.

Why's it iffy in terms of realism? Given the magical way in which Cantrians can magic notes out of thin air, I'm sure an automatic note writer fitted to radios would be perfectly plausible.

So, a fax macine maybe? But we're probably not far enough in the timeline for that yet.

I actually thought of accomplishing this sort of thing via implementing computers to allow e-mail transport of notes. It wouldn't be added anytime soon (would require programming) but right now Mafia Salad is correct. This is an in game thing that can and should be worked out. :)

Do you have any idea how difficult that is? Try this one - hire an operator who tomorrow will still remember he/she is an operator.

Timeline? Well, didn't both allies and axis have ways of sending text during WWII, and they didn't have helicopters yet. At least we can make the engines already...sort of.

Faxes or teletype would be brilliant. Think! Fax machines in locked rooms! Ideal for those large and busy multiregion empires under Stalin-like dictators, young businessmen or women with secret weapon stores and devious plots, etc.... All those reasons why the GAC won't ever let us have them.

A fax machine I can deal with - telegraphs have been around since the mid 19th Century.

Fax machine is a good idea.
But it is different machine than radio so radio message shouldn´t go to fax machine.
Fax machine should also be more expensive than radio because fax machine saves the message but radio doesn´t.

A nice feature would be, if you are outside a building with a radio, that you get a message like *You hear a message over the radio*
You don't hear what.

This message is also hearable when you are in an adjacent room.

Agreed.

Radio is another thing. I like it as is.
