Wrong, in many cases they are making a negative effect and causing more work for other volunteers. Such a situation has arisen before, too.
N-Aldwitch is correct. However, I'd also like to add that as someone who formerly managed staff volunteers in another game, it is -very- difficult to "fire" them, even when they are obviously power-tripping or pushing their agendas, since they are part of the game community and don't simply leave once fired. The ones that cause problems through negligence always think that they are doing the best they can, and things get rough because feelings get hurt. The ones that cause problems by advancing personal agendas have all the players that they pander to ready to come to their defense, which leads to -huge- problems. If you think the sociologist is rude, you have no idea how bad things can really get (although knowing this first-hand doesn't make reactionary criticism any easier to deal with).
Having open forums like this has the benefit of getting a wide range of input, but the decidedly negative impact of reducing the staff size. Players either see the abuse that staff is sometimes subjected to and think "no way am I subjecting myself to that," or the ones that do volunteer can't handle the criticism and quit. It would be interesting to see the stats on staff turnover. Maybe BC can enlighten me? (I personally would count inactives as dropouts).
Sorry for the speech. Don't take this as pro-staff or anti-player, I'm just telling you the truth as I've experienced it. The community here is much nicer to the staff than any community I've ever experienced before.
