Any historians out there?

Postby Gor Mar » Thu May 31, 2007 12:21 am

:?: I was wondering if any one could show me a link or tell me about Cantr history. And by that i mean what has happened in the world.

Cantr history is much too rich and complex to tell. It's almost like asking for a history of earth. Every language group, island, region, town and individual has their own complex history.

You could browse through old threads and read about specific events which have happened here and there. If you want to know about some particular area we might post links to threads for you.

Also, it would be against the rules of the game to know everything that has happened. One important aspect of Cantr is that your characters learn things in game. Thus, your char might hear a skewed version of historical events because the the victors or survivors write the history.

Many towns have libraries where chars can read histories but, again, there's no telling how much they reflect true events.

Have fun!

Actually, I take the Capital Rule as okay to know alot about Cantr's history, long as you don't use it's knowledge to your advantage in-game. Don't forget that having your character go the library to just know for yourself (the player) is technically a Capital Rule Breach, because your motivation is outside of the game. But that's my opinion.

You could also use the Cantr Webzine for some good in-game stories and poems, including the debunking of the Maynard Leeward myth on Issue 3 and The Ranger's Tale, starting from Issue 2.
Notice how weak and petty we are / In the grand fixture we come afar / Hey we can't help it / No denying the prerequisite for love / Your very existence / You're the source of my substenance / Slow down take your time and feel the / Flow

Yes, you're right. It's OK for the player to know as long as he doesn't let his knowledge effect his chars behavior but that's a hard concept for a new player so it's really better to play for a while without knowing too much history IMO.

Yes, Leo is on to something with the Webzine's wealth of Cantrian history and literature...both outside and inside the game itself. You'll also find articles about certain players, towns, and characters. My personal recommendations would be a comparison between

http://www.cantr.net/e107/e107_plugins/ ... content.89

and

http://www.cantr.net/e107/e107_plugins/ ... ontent.113

since the former is more of a commentary and latter more of a prosaic approach of the same story, same person.

This is an interesting topic for me, I've always been interested in cantr history. I fancy I've been playing long enough not to let OOC information effect my characters, so if anyone could help me out with a history of the MacGregors, either here or via pm, I would be very grateful.

Just because some people love/appreciate direct answers..
Some things include:

-The Blackrocks
An influential and powerful tribe developed in the upper (western) area of a small island. Isolated from any large overbearing nation from a continent coming to stop them, they flourished. They sat on a very rich source of hematite - also the only source of hematite on the island. This gave the small group an immense advantage over their outnumbering enemies.
For many years there was a 'Cold War' in fear of the Blackrocks attacking. After this time, the Blackrocks did attack, and did so viciously. They oblitterated Kwor Beach I believe.. and caused much havoc elsewhere.
However, admist the failure of the island's defenses, there were slow, gradual, minor victories against the inhumane Blackrocks. And slowly, the island won back it's lost freedom.
Eventually it came to the point where the Blackrocks had to go into exile. The exodus of the Blackrocks occured in the later parts of the war (quite recent actually) and they gathered up all their supplies, as much as they could carry, and left the island in search of a new, safe land - the boats were filled with Blackrock survivors.
They did indeed find a new land, however the following events I describe are based on indirect assumptions (ie a friend's character dying in a particular town I believed to be Blackrock'ian).
I think they left the Outpost they built, or they were chased out, or they were wiped out. In any case, true, pure Blackrock exiles from the island are few and far apart. I indeed still have a decendent Blackrock that spawned under an exiled Blackrock in the 'new' lands, but we got seperated. (I have found out OOCly that he died).

-The Alexian Empire
Think Rome. The Alexian Empire was at a point where it was thriving, back in the old days. It was a very, very powerful empire that ruled many towns with honor, virtue, and the like.
My knowledge of specific events is very, very poor so I'll need others to extend, but the basic gist of it is that the Alexian Empire just seemed to die out very slowly without any great battle destroying them.
However! Recently, there are numerous reports of the Alexian Empire arising again to it's former glory, retaking some towns that it lost, and so on. It may soon be a dominant, influential power in the game once more.

-Various Tribes/Pirates/Empires
I'll only refer to my mini-tribes/Empires but there was a very short-lived empire called the Ginger Empire, led by a sadistic, cruel, two-faced, heartless, cold, materialistic woman named Felin Ginger. She would kill people just to use their items for militaristic purposes, at one stage she had an armada of bikes and other vehicles and enough troops to combat any decent force that dare stop her.
She led a force against Sjoftich Hills South after the leaders declined joining the Empire. She, being an arrogant, angry and dominant woman, insisted on action.
While the battle was hugely successful (almost everyone was slaughtered - civilian, guard or leader), one particularly recognised and respected leader did escape to a nearby town. This town happened to be home of a very powerful military force that were still enjoying the loot of a massive, now-defeated group called the Barons. They were very powerful and in a swift, tactical move, completely oblitterated any military force remaining in Sjoftich Hills south, and with Felin's grand army out of the equation, wiped out Fenarion (the capital city of the Ginger Empire) - they were very quick and efficient and organised, almost all buildings had locks replaced on them. They also found the dead bodies of many poor prisoners inside the jail who had been tortured to death slowly.
Felin did temporarily escape. She was told to avoid Alenz Hills (where her love was, her last line of possible defense against the overwhelming armies from the north.. or east, I'm not too sure) but she went there anyway. She actually took a massive loop right around all the enemy towns, meeting many allies on the way, telling them good luck with life, as she knew she was to die. When she arrived at Alenz Hills, she was killed within minutes.
Thus ending the 'evil' dictator, Felin Ginger.

That Felin Ginger story is the few I know best - mainly because I obviously was there. This is also why it's so long.

Perhaps someone would like to write about the barons? I don't have time right now.
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

Note that, unlike most other games out there, Cantr has no pre-defined 'history'. You won't find any 'lore' except that which was written by the players. Cantrian history started the day the first character spawned...

The best place to look for historical documents is In-Game, or just get your character to ask. Personally, I always find it fun when a newspawn gets a discussion running amongst old characters about the history of an area...

The webzine would be another good place
If you are looking for OOC discussion, there are a number of substantial topics in the forum here:
TBR and Noniwrok discussion (No war talk) (Just re-reading this is interesting - it was posted during the lead-up and whilst the war was occuring...
The Great War between TBR / Black Wolves and K-Island
Krif and Djorf
The end of the Alexian Empire

etc...

Most historical events are limited to certain areas or locations. i.e: The Tribe Blackrock had an immeasurable effect on K-Isle, but are unknown anywhere else.
So search for placenames and see what comes up...

And, welcome :)
Whoever you vote for.

The government wins.

Having played one of the three leaders of Clan MacGregor, it is quite fortunate that I still check the forums from time to time. ;) This chapter of aged purple prose is largely fictional, but it has some basis of truth: http://www.cantr.net/e107/e107_plugins/ ... ontent.118 .

You will also find more information on Clan MacGregor in game, in Gregor's own memoires (Strength and Honour), Glen Morangie's Tales, John Locke's the Ranger's Tale (March of the MacGregors--overlapping with one of Glen's Tales, and reflecting quite vividly on how many liberties Glen took in his own writings), and various other tales, short stories, etc, from Angus, Kindle, and other members of the Clan.

Clan MacGregor was founded by William Lawson (who became Gregor MacGregor), a member of the much bloated "Magnificent Seven", naming the Clan after Gregar Mendal, close confidante with Seatown Forest's Donna Trent. These figures helped push away various tribal and warring groups such as the Smoke Jaguars and Craktar "the Vampire" in Krif. This seeded the soil for the Mid-North Union. (400-500s)

The era of the MidNorth Union, heralded in by regional cooperation...this is almost largely captured in the Ranger's Tale. Indeed, the Rangers were created in the spirit of the MidNorth Union converging with the Clan, since Gregor was the first leader of the Rangers--Locke being the third leader. The Rangers and Clan were "cousins." Also, since Gregor married Jessamin DuVar of the Nosse, the Nosse and the Clan were also "cousins." (600s-700s)

Nevertheless, with the dissappearance/deaths of figures (such as Maily Yumm, replacement to Donna Trent; Lady Kindle MacGregor of the Clan) who understood the delicate balance of SF-Drojf/Krif-MacGregors. and with the death of Jessamin DuVar, Gregor accused Drojf/Krif of wrongdoing. Relations between the Clan and the region hit a new low--the Clan itself was never weaker, but the region did not realize this. Krif was having its own turbulence with various murders and killings. (800s-900s)

In Gregor's final days, he also participated in attempts to repair the relationship with the credible parts of the Union through John Locke's son, Ranger Sean Warren Desmond Locke. At the same time, there emerged one Angus MacGregor who throughout his years drove up recruitment numbers of effective MacGregors to never before seen numbers, extended MacGregor borders, collectivized the various authorities within the realm, expanded production, became an ambassador of goodwill (even if not everyone agreed, but they tried) and inspired a revival in Clan traditions and mythologies. Gregor was so impressed that he proclaimed Angus his son--and Lord Angus would become his heir. Much of what you see today emerged from how he interpreted his father's policies. Of course, with his passing, Lady Darlina, his lover, took over with much skill and ability, as we've seen. (--> present)

Coincidentally, whereas Locke stressed written and recorded history, Angus' legacy to the Clan was to stress the idea of story telling and oral tradition and history. He believed this a part of the investment in human capital formation...and giving them something to hold onto until they too passed (it) on.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask or consult your local KDS or Castle library (since I don't have access and this is from memory).

The numbers of the MacGregor have fallen- the old ones have died. Some 3 or 4... but now, many many MANY new recruits are becoming MacGregors like me and a few others. We tried to assist in the slave master a while ago (I was one of them) and tried to stop the pirate. We also helped the town after the attack of the Bushi Tribe. That the current for the MacGregors.

You can expect another great moment in history soon enough... soon enough.

Wrongdoing indeed. If I recall correctly he suspected that Krif had killed her through witchcraft! Those hillfolk and their wacky ideas. :D

lol that would be realistic though, especially in the kind of neo-medieval age cantr is set in so huzzah to the amazing rping that took place during that event, plus I'd believe it in real life if i could only shoot at a deer once a day

That Felin Ginger story is the few I know best - mainly because I obviously was there. This is also why it's so long.

Yet few really know the true history of Sjoftich Hills North. Most only view Felin as completely evil and heartless, other than Pete..and she did what ever she could to push me out of the way and become dictator of the town. I've been accused of not killing her when I had the chance, even Felin told me I it was my mistake for not killing her..but I wasn't in a particular rush, since she had plenty of keys and was causing the town to grow industrially. She was brilliant, and even supported good morals (she made her own Cantr religion)I was just plotting her against every minute of my day... she insulted my good friends, even mocking their death..sometimes she's friendly, other times attacking me..but what she really wanted was to rule a successful empire, and she was willing to kill anyone in her way..But its hard for evil to succeed, in Cantr or RL, because who wants to be ruled over? It never lasts in the end..and it ended out fine enough, because who's still living? :P (For more info-look for note I made IC, or PM  )

Anyway..
Blackrock: Nicki and Steven died under my hand! Muahaha...that's what happened when the sleepy army awakened.
As far as I know, the remnant of the Blackrocks tried to escape on the sea. I don't know much else.

Kiii: Ah..the town of Kiii, continuing to flourish with generosity to all man-kind. A bunch of pirates came and massacred the town. I happened to be gone at the time. I came back to find a ruined town. Under Jaina, with the help of Zuzi, the town was restored to its former health.
I could go on to say more about Jaina and AJ Justice(  ), but its not really all that historical...

Doryiskom: Oh, Doryiskom! Who wants to learn about Doryiskom! Too much to say! Who plays Madeline, anyway?

Mulof North: Maybe you've heard of the event at Mulof North? The Bushi Tribe, run by Corran Horn, an old friend of the leader of Mulof North, things didn't work out apparently..the Bushi tribe attacked Mulof North with one goal: kill Brandy, to take back the land that was stolen from them. We weren't very prepared for a fight, but we had some help, and eventually Corran was killed. But...I think we should go back much further than that, before Brandy's time, to the almost forgotten names of Satan MaVet and Caine Nanazaki..wow, with names like that its almost inevitable for something bad to happen. (Satan and Caine? Get it? Yeah..anyway.) Mulof North under the rule of Caine, with Satan forever loyal to Caine. For some reason, Caine locks up a man, who is then starving inside the building. Seko feels that this is an injustice, so after some lock breaking, the man is released..and soon begins to attack Caine, breaking the lock of whatever building she is in. He breaks into the storage, and steals a large amount of valuable resources (luckily I already picked most of the iron and steel) Caine and Satan soon run off with plans of building a boat and escaping into the ocean. The man chases after them, and as I attack, he wounds me deeply, leaving me one choice: turn back or dying in a vain attempt to help Caine. I've tried looking for them later, but never found any more information. (if anyone knows what happened, I'd appreciate it)

There are many many stories to tell of Cantr, and its a never-ending story!

I remember Corran. I wasn't there when he died, but I do remember getting the news that he had..
