Comparisons with Second Life
My newspaper is forever going on about this game, which I can't nor do I want to play, but how does it compare with Cantr?
It's been claimed many times in these furums that Cantr is unique, but is Second Life that much of a different concept as a society simulator?
If anyone here has tried it, could you give your views, please?

Second Life sucks, and I hate it. It's nothing like Cantr, and it's not enjoyable IMO. If people think the learning curve in Cantr is steep, its' 4x steeper in second life.
It's basicly a giant world to design useless crap and sell it to other players. It isn't a game, really (although there are games within it).

My only experience with Second Life is trying to get through the tutorial island with some Brazilian guy following me around begging for my phone number. It crashed often and I haven't tried it again since I put more memory in my computer. I don't really feel a need to mess with it, though. I have nothing to sell, no business venture I wish to pursue there... I've been told that people do RP - which I didn't think they would.

Yea.. I made it through the tutorial island.. but immediately after I created my char, some other person that created one wanted to cyber... I just ran off and avoided any further contact with others. It looks like there's a lot of neat things a person can do, but it is a pretty steep learning curve. I just haven't bothered with it since my character got trapped in some sphere thing...

Second life is basically the Web 2.0, the 'social networking' sites, in a three dimensional engine.
Unlike other MMORPGs, there is no lore, no goals, no story, no factions etc. It is like Cantr in that respect - it's an entirely, completely, user generated world.
However, Cantr requires roleplay and characterisation. This is not the case in Second Life (although you can choose to).
To get the most out of Second Life, to have any effect on the shape of the world, or the plot of land you own, you have to have at least mediocre skills in three dimensional modelling and script writing.
Sure, you can 'buy' buildings, clothes, accessories. But that's just not much fun.
Like any social networking site, there's a huge volume of junk out there. But if you approach Second Life the same way you might approach MySpace (in my case, a 10 foot barge pole), you'll get something out of it.
Sure, you get annoying people trying to cyber with you (and there's a lot of cybering in Second Life. (Scripted genitals are one of the largest commodities...), but you get those annoying PMs in MySpace. However, like MySpace or whatever, there's usually something for everyone.
Personally, I got in contact with one of the few RP groups out there. Now, that is good fun. Given that you can create anything you want in Second Life, you can RP whatever you want, fully realised in three dimensions, rather than sticking to the constraints of WoW, Eve or whatever.
However, I dropped out, quite some time ago, and never really played for that long. Like most of those MMORPGs or social networking sites, it requires to much time investment.

I've never tried Second Life but the biggest Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat had a big article about it, and later it was even on the news. Sounds like there's no moderation at all. I like Cantr because it's a role-playing game. Role-playing takes some imagination and skill, so most players have some class compared to the half-illiterate masses.

Second Life was godly slow on my computer because my computer is a piece of trash and our internet is slow. But, as HF said, if you spent time you'd like it. I liked driving and flying in helicopters that actually shoot. O.O My brother enjoyed building houses.... but yes, you need to invest a lot of time into it and at least have good internet connection.

Second Life is godly slow no matter what your computer and internet connection are like. The server system they use is horrific.
I've had a second life account for about two years, but I really never go on - I'm not a furry, I don't cyber, and I don't have the time or experience to build things. I only go on anymore to explore, and that quite infrequently.
I'm not dead; I'm dormant.

I thought Second Life was horrible. It looked pretty good at first and then I tried to play it and I hated it...
