The Minor Tidbits in Cantr
It seems nobody cares about the smaller tidbits in Cantr. Like porcelain, something like that would be high in value, however, nobody would care at all. The most saught resources, iron, steel, food. That is all you need, and most other things are neglected.
It seems like we are monks that give up the minor comforts in life. A highly decorated house with beds, closets, tables, really. Who lives in a house with nothing in it? I hope nobody does that here.
We have hundreds if not thousands of things to make, however, do we do anything with them? No. We just worry about food, steel, iron, weaponry, and wood. We don't even bother exploring things.
Whats so wrong with worse efficency, maybe a couch is better than a bed for resting, but for RP purposes, woundn't a bed be more logical instead of sleeping in a couch? I bet.
---
Also, I know some of the things are not possible as of know, but some things are, and are still neglected.
Ok, I'm done with my rant. And I'm not sure if I would go with the efficent is the better thing as I never have owned a building or a boat as of yet. Although I would think of a person getting a furnished room. I've even thought of a pirate getting a radio for every single frequency to listen in on radio things so he can see if they are going to be caught.

I think at this point in Cantr history that is where the need lies. Needs right now far outweigh the wants but as things get easier to make, trade and trade routes become more commonplace, and industries, governments, and markets become more organized I think you will see those items become much more valuable.
Stability is the keyword here and I don't think any one place can really claim that yet. I do think some are pretty close but aren't quite there yet. Perhaps in another Cantr Century we'll see that come to be as stability reigns and wants come to outweigh needs. If you look at real life history you will see a similiar pattern.
The other problem is rarity. Cantr programming has taken steps to restrict resource gathering and production but until a system of where resources can be used up it will be hard to place value on something that is really infinite. Another thing is if a government was smart they themselves would restrict certain resources and by defacto make them rare giving them value and forcing that value onto others. Which is actually done to iron and steel by governments in Cantr. If the same was done for resources like gold and silver then they could give such resources value that can be used in trade. For instance there is enough gold in the real world to make it really unvaluable but due to government, banking, and market restrictions and regulations of it's mining and use it has made it something of value to be used in trade or even backing up systems of money to give that value. Another example is that due to rarity of diamonds occuring naturally in nature any naturally formed diamond is valuable due to it's rarity alone in the first place. Value is also a mindset that a society has to adopt or be forced to adapt to.

True. Players look at the game and see different things they want to achieve which might have nothing to do with markets and value. But I dare assume that your characters do value something. If your characters value work then that's a value that can be placed in a market if a shrewd and smart person came along and used that to their advantage. And I assume your characters are using their work to gain something they feel is valuable such as food, better tools, or whatever else they may feel they want or need.

and here one of my characters manufactured his own wooden plate and bragged about him being civilized. He can eat his food from a plate, rather from his armpit (or wherever he would carry food). It's all part of how serious RPer you are I think.
as for clothes, well... Protection and a secure supply of food, then I worry about clothing :p

This is how Cantr is. It's been that way for years and years to come. This is how this seperate world is developed. There's really no use complaining about it, because those naked characters and empty houses is set in stone in history.
And I like it this way, really. It's all very original; even the suicidal thieves is what made this originality in this game. A whole seperate set of cultures, written works, landmarks; they're all influenced from this world's own history. There are the occasional names named-after-real people or out-of-character references, but aside from that, it's what really got me hooked in this game in the first place.

Notice how weak and petty we are / In the grand fixture we come afar / Hey we can't help it / No denying the prerequisite for love / Your very existence / You're the source of my substenance / Slow down take your time and feel the / Flow

We all play things differently.
For any char, his/her first years will be concentrating on survival. It is only the older chars, who've set themselves up properly, who can afford the luxuries. At least that's what happens to mine. Once they've got past the subsistence stage they can start to RP and get fancy things like pillows, beds, diamond rings etc.
As most chars don't seem to survive this long, things won't change.
Remember, the biggest difference between Cantr and RL is that the Cantr population is stable/decreasing even and the world still largely unexplored. The opposite of our own.
As for stability, that is probably due, as forum contributors have suggested, to the lag, and mayhem may soon be rife again... which takes the boredom out of the game, but wastes resources and halts progress.
Note how K-isle is at last getting itself up to date...
But the nearer RL things get, as I said, the more boring they are likely to be to many players.

People rarely go to other people's buildings, except to steal so who would you impress with your fine china tea-set and furniture? If items aren't behind a locked door or held by you then someone's going to steal it, so you can't have loose accessories in your house and greet people with open doors.
Furniture has no descriptions unlike clothing, so even if you used a lot of working hours and fancy tools and resources, it's still gonna be just a few words long. And since you can't do anything with for example a table, it's easily overlooked. I proposed that we should be able to put items on top of various furniture, and they would appear indented so that the viewer would know the things belong to a sub-group. But most likely ProgD has their hands full with the lag now.
Also compared to other things, furniture is obscenely expensive. Even the plain items (and most things are plain, since there's no need for making lux options when even the plain ones are obscenely expensive) require a lot of time and wood. The tools are not that impossible for advanced people but stone age people are pretty much screwed. You can't split a log with your stone axe, chop some holes in the bottom and attach legs to make a bench. I understand tables being difficult to make since planks would most likely require a saw.
If you could just walk in a carpenter's shop and order stuff made then woot, but this being Cantr, you would most likely end up making all the tools and machinery yourself. And after you have your private workshop, you're gonna need a new room for the furniture to make it look classy, plus you won't have enough time to ever go to your fancy room.

OMG!
Imagine this:
A green, simple, basic floorplan!!!
Need I explain more? (this is based off Seko's claim that no one notices furniture anyway)
Where does this go, this image?
It replaces the map in Location.. (because you GENERALLY can't see outside of a building that has no windows.
)
Maybe I should suggest this.. but we should discuss it first maybe..

Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

About the resting furniture:
In order to build up a bed, you must be rich and crazy.
Rich because the bed is really EXPENSIVE, and needs rather technologies. More than many boats.
And crazy because it is really useless.
Most of the RP items are more than luxuries, excessively expensive, and they have no practical purposes.
A bed in RL have practical purposes: makes you feel better when resting on it. In Cantr, it is pointless, because a 2% each turn is just ridiculous.
The same with clothes.
The same with storing furnitures.
The same with the rest of the furnitures (that are completly useless).
It has no sense to spend a year of your real life "playing" a game for getting those useless items and to see your character murdered by another more practicar character, that spent his time making weapons and other usefull things. It has no kind of funny.

IRL people would work with what they got instead of chasing something they've never heard of. People can't make a bed without cotton? That's just ridiculous. They could make the bed frame and they could make the bottom out of hemp webbing, leather straps etc etc. Use for mattress what ever soft things are available, furs, wool in different forms, fir branches? But the system doesn't allow substituting components and making different combinations without RD writing up a project for each possible combination, which would lead into a huge list of options.
I doubt there is any functional town where a person could buy food from one shop, clothes from another, metals from a third and furniture from fouth, be able to pay with something they gathered in the same town or nearby and be able to trust that required items will be available or can be produced shortly.
