Meeting Foreigners
Hey, have you met a foreigner. Like a Polish explorer coming to an English land. So- how has it went.
Well, my character- bored with the Stone Knights, wants to go with a Spanish explorer that just arrived. (is that against the rules interacting with a person from a different language?) It fits into my RP, so, I say, what the heck.
But anyway, how did you meetings go? Probably massacres, I hope Treefeather spawns Spanish players here. VERY interesting things will happen then...
I'm all up for mixed language groups as long as spawn with your own language groups on the island instead of having to search for them.

Lalala...
One of my characters has met Polish explorers and then a German ship lost very far away. In both cases the character (I) tried to learn the foreign language from zero, it was quite amusing. I never read Polish before.
Now I'm sad cos I actually started to think about learning German as 4th language, but I'm going to do English Philology through the University of Distance Education and it seems they'll only give French as option for 2nd language.
No offense for French people but I already speak two romanic languages and... well... I would enjoy more something a bit different.

Many of my characters have had contact with foreigners and it usually went very well. (As a matter of fact it is virtually impossible to get not in touch with strangers if you play a German character.
)And it's of course allowed to interact with them. As long as you don't start to talk their language all of a sudden however.
If I were you, I would take the chance and follow the explorer. One of my characters had a similar chance once and he spent his next 15 years travelling with the stranger. It was one of my most interesting Cantr experiences up to now.

DOOPS! XD I used a (real good, well, I can understand it) translater and spoke in Spanish to the guy. XD Just one sentence, almost everything else was spoken in English.
I guess I shouldn't speak in Spanish. I did:
"I seem to be able to understand your language somehow. Interesting." in Spanish.
I won't speak Spanish again.
---
I plan to travel to a Spanish island and live the rest of my life there. Although that will make for some interesting RPing. He's showing me the way- is that aginst the rules also?

no, and from what i hear as long as you are immersed in the culture for a significant time (say a decade) it SHOULD be ok for you to use a translator.
im tryin to do it for polish, so far all i understood inately (no prior experience) is that the pols think im a barbarian, but that im better dressed than them. (full hemp outfit with a feather cloak and a fur hat)

One of my characters has lived with the Russians for several years. His first meeting with the language group was when he was circumnavigating the island, had seen no people for a long while and was naturally lonely. In one location he saw a wounded lonely girl and decided to drag her on board. It was easy since she was injured and he's rather strong. But when she woke up, she said something that was completely strange to him (especially since the encoding was off). He couldn't get what the heck she was saying so he got nervous and decided to drop her off in the next location. Never saw her again. I wonder who it was. It happened day 1358 according to my character's journal but I don't have a turn report for that day.
So later he decided to settle in this location where he had left the woman years back. He built a little house but then a ship appeared, and dropped off three people. He was nervous because they weren't trying to slide notes or knock or communicate in any way, just harvesting his resources. He was pretty advanced technicwise so he had the metals and tools for making a dirt motorcycle, only missing the rubber. So he started walking towards the forest with rubber. But one of the people came after him, and this made him grumpy (and scared). So eventually he turned around and said "This is my road" as in go find your own. But the guy just points at the road and says "daroga". And suddenly he's not so scary anymore, my character comes to realize that these people have only been silent because they couldn't understand what the heck he's saying. So while he gathers rubber and the Russian boy gathers wood, they teach each other some words. It was rather fun, the only problem was the time slip happening, making them forget some of what they had learned. This resulted in a word list with 7 word pairs. My character has extended it by 20 lines. There is also a Russian to English dictionary that has 39 lines, it has proven to be very useful. Still a lot of things have to be explained through pantomime.
Another character of mine has met some Esperanto people. There was a newspawn girl that was very cheerful and kissed him when he lay down to rest. But she had to go travelling. My character was able to pick up some simple phrases. Later he returned to the location and there was a young man who would've wanted to go sailing with him, but he managed to explain to him that his boat is very slow, so the boy when on building his own boat. There was also another character who saw my character making iron and wanted to trade some of it for onions.
Another character of mine was in a location with some Swedish characters and it was fun enough understanding all they said OOC - until I heard one saying "I agree we should kill everyone here, but lets start from the ones who seem to be the biggest threat." You don't wanna hear things like that, especially if you cannot react to it in any way. Fortunately they didn't carry out their plan after all.

Some of my characters (Spanish) have found Polish traders (still can't realize what to do with those coffee beans), Swedish traders (thanks for the iron ore!), and English explorers (just "hello").
Two of my characters are now travelling with those two English explorers.

Ey, of course, Dutch, German and some French characters as well. Inevitable, as those four languages groups share the same two islands.
In fact, I have characters in five cities where populations are mixed (two German/Spanish, one Dutch/Spanish, and two Dutch/German/Spanish). In some places all of them cooperate, in other places each group ignores the other, and at least in one place quarrels are arising.

With German characters it is quite easy to get along with Dutchies because in their written form the languages are very close, though for the Dutch people it seems to be harder to understand written German. (My local variant of German still bears traces of Low Saxon which makes it much easier to understand Dutch.
