So, there is already mixture of languages, at least G/S/F/D. In my opinion this is not a pleasant feature. Why do I have to make a choice for a language when I spawn a character? We already left the idea of language countries.

Why is the same thing not happening with eg the English and the Turkish area?
Only because there are no English people in the Turkish area? That doesn't make sense.

And what if I can't speak another language, e.g. because I'm only 12 years and I got in the Spanish Area?

Back to the subject.
I like it to have a choice for a language, If I choose Dutch I'm getting in a Dutch area, when I choose mixed I get in a mixed environment.

I always went by the assumption that if you spawn in another language's native zone, your charrie should have at least a working knowledge of the language. This is why I use a translator to understand what they say. (the charrie has been there for a decade now) Surely after 10 years of being immersed in the language, the charrie would know how to speak the lanauge as well, at least brokenly.

IMO, it is a wonderful feature. Maybe you could start a poll, but many players love the chances of intercultural mixture that this game allows.

bmartes wrote:Why do I have to make a choice for a language when I spawn a character? We already left the idea of language countries.

Because your character is supposed to belong to a certain cultural group, i.e. if you choose Dutch, your character's parents will be Dutch, so he will appear only where there are (several) Dutch characters, and your character will be allowed to speak only that language until he roleplays the learning of other languages.

bmartes wrote:Why is the same thing not happening with eg the English and the Turkish area?

Actually, it happens. If you browse the forum (and its languages subgroups), you will find info as the following:
(Some) Russian areas are flooded by English characters.
Turkish and Swedes are or were mixed, if non of them has obliterated the others in their area (Swedes begun in a big island near the small one of the Turkish).
Lithuanian and Portuguesse are or were involved in a long war for the control of their island.

But in each place, this happens in a different way. Sometimes the war is the unique relationship, sometimes the different cultures try to get along peacefully and to trade (and to learn the others languages), and sometimes there is a mixture of love and hate.

bmartes wrote:And what if I can't speak another language, e.g. because I'm only 12 years and I got in the Spanish Area?

If you are 12 years old, you will have more time to learn new languages, more time to spend using online translators, more time spend searching the dictionary.
And no matter your age, you can just ignore or kill the other languages (if they are not the dominant in the place), or look for another unhabitated place, and settle your community with your only language.
But take care of being far enough from more powerful languages groups if you are planning to set xenophobic laws, or your settlement will likely became ashes.

For your information, my first two Spanish characters appeared in Dutch controlled regions (and some in German regions), and it was very difficult to understand them or even to understand why one of my characters was attacked for taking some bones from the ground. Now that character is in the Spanish island, having an English, a German and two Spanish companions (and they are near a only-Dutch town).

bmartes wrote:when I choose mixed I get in a mixed environment

No way, I think.

Cantr is a game, but also a civilization simulator, which is one of the more interesting points. As it is happening in the real world, globalization will finally mix up all the languages in Cantr, and probably will suppose the extinction of some of them. You (your Dutch characters) want Dutch being stronger than others? Help on the advertising and "work" hard in game for that goal.

Cantr is not intended to allow absolutle isolation from other languages ("Societies exist in different languages, whereby all language groups play in the same virtual world"). If you are looking for that, IMO, Cantr II is not your game, or you can play only in English (or in Polish) and not to move away form that islands.

When I spawn in a place surrounded by other language group, I assume that the (roleplayed) learning time is shoot down. But don't forget that in Cantr, although you "born" at 20 years old, your charrie is in fact 0 years old.
At least, until babies are implemented.

Zanthos wrote:(the charrie has been there for a decade now) Surely after 10 years of being immersed in the language, the charrie would know how to speak the lanauge as well, at least brokenly.

And then the use of online translators is even a good practice.

But you shouldn't create a character in a language that you don't know and you are not planning to study (for example, spawning a Chinesse character if you have no idea about Chinesse). This is a CRB.
Please, note that this is not the case of spawning a character and being surrounded by another language's characters.

In Spain during the Middle Age it wasn't strange that several cultures lived together (and peacefully) in the same city. Most of the country was barren land due to wars and pandemics, and kings often had to bring people from other regions to repopulate it.

In Valencia city there were Muslims, Jews and Christians living and trading together (until Jews and Muslims were banned in 1492). During the 1400-1500 Valencia had a brilliant culture and economy, even surpassing Barcelona. It felt into decadence in the XVI century.

Cultural mixtures are interesting and so they must be in Cantr... with a bit of patience and creativity.

The point about the language mixture is not that I don't want to mix languages, but the fact that when you choose a language you'll get the idea that you are spawned in the chosen language area.

About 12 years and time and so on: My daughter has dislexya. It was for her a reason to quit...

btw. what is a development monitor?

o yeah, and my spanish sucks...

If people want to live in a multicultural environment then they can start sailing. Apparently most of the islands are bundled up pretty close, I think only Chinese and Finns have no contact with other language groups and that might be because they're new and the spawning locations are far from seas.

It would be more important to give people a chance of spawning among their own people rather than being randomly thrown to some location that happened to have two representatives of your language group some days ago. Include a tick box that eliminates the chance of spawning in locations where the language group you're spawning into is outnumbered by another language group(s).

I understand you. My first character was surrounded by Dutch characters (the few Spanish speaking characters were asleep). My second one appeared alone in the middle of nowhere.
But most of the players expects to be surrounded by characters of their chosen language.
So...
SekoETC wrote:Include a tick box that eliminates the chance of spawning in locations where the language group you're spawning into is outnumbered by another language group(s).

Nice, I support it.
But it won't solve every situation. For example where the targeted language is outnumbered everywhere, or is near high populated areas of other languages that can eventually "invade" them.

We could set new far away spawning points for those outnumbered languages. But this would be and artificial awkward solution, and given that...
SekoETC wrote:If people want to live in a multicultural environment then they can start sailing.

If people want to live in a mono-cultural environment, they can start sailing, and look for a new place, as well.

I mean...
You can solve this in game.

For the Dutch case, there is a BIIIIG island relatively close, that is almost unhabited and unexplored (just becasue it is really huge comparatively). A group of three or four Dutch characters could start a new civilization there being sure that they will be alone for a long time. And if in the meanwhile the Dutch players base grows enough, you won't have to worry about other languages coming there.

buddyhall wrote:reset

No way. Cantr is a persistent universe.
Everyone, when starts playing, can think that a reset would be a good idea.
But all the rest of players that have been here for years can't see it with a smile. And you know.
If you want to start from the beggining, sail towards horizont during some months and look for an unhabitated place.

An anyways, the civilization simulation would be rather hindered or iven pointless if you reset anything with any kind of periocity.

Not necessarily... I know that there are places where the Polish and English have formed some dictionaries from their interactions. One uses drawings to show more complex things to explain.

It would be useful if people on first contact with foreigners would go through telling the names for resources and items they're carrying, and translate such phrases as "My name is X, what's your name?" Things like that are usually pretty easy to get. If people of different language groups keep living together then things can be learned through context and guessing.
