I agree that seasons would be a good idea for the start. You could implement hard/mild winters and dry/moist summers if the system works properly, too. I don't think we would need any more weather beyond that point, a cantrian season is already a really short period for some players and they would hardly have time to react on weather changes. Don't forget that Cantr is supposed to be a slow paced game and daily weather changes could be unfair to players who can't log in every day. As long as weather has a strong enough effect to the game at least.

There's no reason to cram four seasons into a year, or even have 4 seasons at all. We could have less or more.

Given that older people tend to feel the cold more - and are generally more likely to get ill as a result - then just implementing temperature, with clothing to combat it, would be something that could be aimed at older people.

I've met people in their fourties/sixties who have a wealth of iron but are not willing to trade any of it for clothing as there's no incentive for them. They just walk around naked making more iron. If young people can sell clothing to old people, this might help some transfer of old people's wealth down to younger people.

So - once you reach your thirties, you start feeling the cold a little. By the time you're in your sixties, you need clothes of some sort or you'll be dead.

Clothes would indeed have weight - fine clothes like silk being expensive to make, but light - and a think fur coat being easier to make in rural areas but taking a lot of space.

Very good points psymann. The weight stuff would give incentive for making silk and cotton clothing since it's lighter.

Currently some items have "metarules" that if the same kind of clothing article can be made of different clothing materials, the articles will take the same amount of cloth/leather no matter what material is in question. A bit backwards... And finer clothes have extra cloth to symbolize material that needs to be cut off in process, so the result doesn't weight as much as the resources used for it.

Just one more big pain in the ass to deal with. You all want to make it harder to live in Cantr and we can not even keep those we want to stay. If there is weather there must be rocket launches to the Moon and Mars. I want to be somewhere where there is not so much I want babies, I want obsidian spears as strong as steel, I want 4000+ grams a day water from a well. When will your little ninny nagging selves quit bitching?

Hmm, characters no weather... OOO Now weather comes "what is this strange cold white stuff falling from the *points up in fear* It is so cold. *digs hole in dirt and buries head in hole and waits to die*

No no no and again no. Too much bull shit to deal with as it is.
Go and self circumcise oneself and say you loved it.
If a female you can remove a lip or two and say you loved it.
Can not add weather to those who have never experienced it.
Might as well give them magic carpets to ride on.

psymann: if they can make iron they can surely make clothing.

SekoETC: cotton and silk are a joke even if clothing ever gets to weight. Cotton and silk gather for shit and is not worth the time to fuss with. Hemp hemp hemp hemp and wool wool.

Piscator: seasons worthless as they would only be 5 days.
Beyond your agreement with seasons I agree.

BTW I remember my circumcision so do not bullshit me on the pain.

Add weather and you might as well add "god" to the game.

Weather happens and that will be the first thing I will impart to my characters. I will use what I know in my characters.
Stupid shit like this is killing the game.
Ever wonnder why you are losing characters and players?
That is probably why.

Suggestions such as this just piss me off so much. Screw it if I offended anyone.

Who says seasons have to be based on a year? this is cantr, not real life. Maybe Cantrian seasons are based on a 2 year or 5 year basis.

And weather really shouldnt be that big of a deal, storms wont be that big of an occurance! And even if there is a huge storm, chances are that it won't hit where your charries are, and even if it does, i doubt that progd would put something in that could kill characters without giving them a chance to do anything about it.

lets be reasonable people.

Even if there is a slightest change in weather, any Cantrian would notice. Think about it. They've been used to the assumed sunny weather for decades, and if even they feel a stronger breeze in the air, chances are they would overreact to it. It's reasonable enough since no other Cantrian ever witnessed such a phenomenon.

That's the whole point I had in mind when creating this thread. It wasn't intended to debate whether it should be implemented or not, how should it implemented, the factors, ect. It's here to simply discuss how people would roleplay their characters when weather comes. Even if weather is never to be implemented, I for one would like to know your opinion.

Seriously, would you have your character panic screaming the end of the world when he/she saw the darkening clouds at first sight? I certainly would.

Honestly, I'd do it like I do all new tools and other similar implementations... pretend it always was... whenever the mechanics of the game change, I take the stance that so are the memories of my charries...

Yes, that's what most will do.
How many are RPing the current lag? That's an ideal example of what could be classed as weather/divine intervention etc, but almost everyone ignores it. It'll just be another inconvenience, like the diseases, suffered by most, and a trigger for the abandonment of the game for others.

I personally see it in a frame of reference that weather probably already occurs, but nobody believes it is important enough to notice. in this scenario, implementation of weather isn't so far a change of game mechanics but a change in how charries think. Now they choose to observe weather, kind of how we now choose to observe global warming. 40 years ago, it was there but we thought it was unimportant.

I'm a literalist, so weather would have been a big deal for all my characters. If they didn't see it before, it didn't exist ;-)
