Too old to change personality?

Postby BarbaricAvatar » Wed May 02, 2007 3:11 pm

Hi, i was just wondering again.

I have a char who is 22, he spoke a bit for the week he stayed in the town where he spawned, and then moved on and hasn't interacted with anyone since. He doesn't really have a personality yet, but i was wondering if i change the way he speaks, would that be considered a bad thing to do?
He's no longer even the area where he spawned and has spoken to so few people that there's little chance of seeing any of them again, but then there's still a chance.

It has happened in the past, sometimes the style of talking even depends on the situation and company. Like a person might talk very eloquently when trading with rich people but use a more common way of talking when dealing with peasants. And if a person is nervous they might start stuttering. But you need to think are you just making a one trick horse, does expressing a personality really demand a heavy accent?

Usually when people change it's due to some experience in life. Your character could turn gloomy due to being ignored, or he might turn very outgoing and cheerful to activate those around him to avoid living through the same boredom as in the previous town.

I remember when someone (I think it may have been Rashad) mentioned to Seko that his talking had improved. That was like a kick for me to concentrate on including at least one grammatical error in each line of speech. It's hard to remember how a character should talk unless you take notes about it.

My fourth character was supposed to have an accent, and I gave it up after about 10 days because it was too damn hard. I wouldn't worry about it.

One of my swedish chars actually started his life talking norwegian. But he got the knack after some time and is talking swedish now (of course with a horrible german accent  )
In the long-run it was just to hard to maintain it...

To come back to topic, I won't mind if a characters behavior changes in his first years, young people are still influenceable, and in your case hardly anyone would notice the change anyway, so what the heck.

Typically I don't know what a character's personality will be before they turn 22. There are so many factors to consider.

Oh. And this seems to be a better fit in General Discussion, so I am moving it.

Malus Harruney has a mixed mind- loneliness causes just quiteness- he prefers that, it seems peaceful to him. However in a place like Dory where its noisy, he's more active, and he doesn't like that. He likes slower life..

I had a character named Jenna Lyle a long long time ago who had spoken normally for a good 5-10 IC years. I hated the char and was bored with it so gave her a speech impediment. Of course, I blamed it on the fact she was hit by some idiot that ran through town hitting everyone.

You may find some IC reason to blame it on if you just look around.
I hate people.

Yeah, being hit is a good reason for getting a personality change.

Haha, I'll tell you the hardest thing to do, try speaking backwards with a character ;). I managed to keep it up for two whole months, spending like twenty seconds working out a word a first, but by the end I had become pretty fluient at backwards writing and I was writing backwards only slightly slower than I could forwards because this was a pretty active character. The moral is, if you have a character with an accent, at first it will be hard work, but then you'll get into that role of writing and it'll be fine.

But yeah, I got bored of the characters actual personality and situation and killed him off. This was quite early in me playing so I still had fairly little patience.
