Where did the name "Cantr" come from?
I don't remember seeing that anywhere.

The name was as random as possible, hoping that it did not already exist

Only to find out later on that you have the Citizens Against New Toll Roads (!) ...

Is randomness the reason none of the towns have pronounceable names as well? My tongue weeps bitterly whenever i have to talk to people about the game :lol:

LOL. I quite agree about that. I just shorten everything, or just about. I have a feeling most people, if meeting other Cantr players IRL, would pronounce things differently. It would be kinda funny.

I think on the whole we all pronounce things similarly, with some variations, but even then there are groups of people who say one variation, and another who say the other

Well, yes, the names are also sort of random

... But in a way that I really like them ... and yes, perhaps I'm the only one who likes such names

...

Note that I tried to learn Russian before and I really liked it, so it's also a bit too much based on Russian, perhaps

... If I need inspiration, I open a Russian map, take some names, mix them, and use it also as inspiration for the rest

...

New areas I am currently creating also get weird names, but also some new types of variations

... e.g. different ways of designating 'north' 'west', etc. ...

But I really like the names in Cantr

... Even though most English speaking players will all have a completely different pronounciation than what I have in mind. I noticed when writing about this on the cantr_ii list a while ago, people had interpretation that I have thought of

The way I say 'cantr' it is said the same way as a word in Irish - ceantar. Ceantar means 'area', thats what I thought it came from.

But wherever it came from its cool!

lol - it sounds like an Irish word? Nobody ever told me, and I told several friends that can speak Gaelic about the game

I suppose it would be whatever way you pronouce both words, but it just happens to be the same way i say both. But I'm not very good at Irish so I could be wrong.

I pronounce it like an American would pronounce 'canter'
which is what a horse does between a walk and a gallop

how do you pronounce words with random j's in them?

Drojf always bothers me
Blojt is a little easier, but still
and ladvicitavoi is just plain fun

I pronounce Cantr with a short e on the end, Cantre. Funny how we all say it differently.

Drojf, silent f.
Blojt, blotch
And just plain Lad.

How about Sjoftch? (sp?) I usually type it something like Sjoftclkajdsflha.

Drojf = Droif
Blojt = Bloit
Ladvicitavoi = ....Lad. or Surpression City...

and cantr? hmm, i'll have to learn phonetic some day... :oops:
