If you could show us some links with info, that would be nice. In my research on this, I came accross kilns for turning wood into charcoal. And they could be quit big. Therefor we use kilns for this, but we could introduce a furnace like you describe, but then give us some info we cna look into.

I think kilns are both... The big structures, either of brick, or the clay ones, needed to be built every time a new batch was produced. Today a kiln is used for pottery but kiln is a word used for both.

Merriam Webster:
Main Entry: kiln
Pronunciation: 'kiln, 'kil
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English kilne, from Old English cyln, from Latin culina kitchen, from coquere to cook -- more at COOK
: an oven, furnace, or heated enclosure used for processing a substance by burning, firing, or drying

And several 100 more where that came from.

Oh, another thing as far as that goes. I built a small smelting furnace, which showed up as a primitive smelting furnace in my building, but it won't do steel, only refine iron ore. There should be some sort of descriptor, even calling it a 'primitive smelting furnace' on the machinery list would help. because I thought a small smelting furnace was just a small smelting furnace.

In real life, I'm making charcoal with a simple home-made alcohol lamp. Granted, the quantities are pretty small, but it is possible to make charcoal without a kiln.
