For now. Coins bad.
Will take a long time for them to become a real part of Cantr.
I have a character that wants to make "disks of metal" to trade for goods, but he has no idea that they will be useless to hiim.
Can I say. Reclaim reclaim reclaim? I may be a moron, but I see coins made being reclaimed.
I could see coins being used in a town to town coin system, but beyond that I do not think that coins will ever be Cantr wide.

...Newspawn has been working for Potato farmer for a few weeks now. It's now time for a paycheck. Potato Farmer sat down with Newspawn when first hired and said he would pay him a set amount of coins for every 1000grams of potatoes the Newspawn dug. So Newspawn now has some coins in which to buy some items. You now have a system that drives supply and demand.
The crime rate will sky-rocket to epic proportions. At least until a suitable law enforcement policy is put into place.
Good point, that's an observation we so far failed to make.
To realize this chars should be able to build walls or a fence around a gatheringspot. Of course some brutal enforcing would work as well but will backfire on the char i'm sure.
It also requires a higher level of organization then we're used to ingame, the making of coins, paychecks, administrators...

Isn't it inevitable? If your char has a business and employs laborers, you will be paying them and therefore need to keep track of how much work they do. Normally the businessowner will keep track but since it is a lot of work anyway and possibly more for many workers it is tedious. So why not hire somebody to do it for you? And why wouldn't your char be interested in a job that pays a bit and all you have to do is file hours and communicate?

Geez, Buddyhall can you scrap that? .. please .. Tiddyogg, didn't you read Sillysavage? You're taking a step back from medieval (coinage) to primitive (banter). Sure banter suits our needs but point is coinage does not.
Why?
Apart from Sillysavage's observation of how cantrians fail to fence in their resources (large difference compared to RL) i think another reason is the high deathrate.

Why are some of you stuck on ide making coins out of iron? Iron iz needed in other things, tools, ships ec... Why cant you think of coins made out of nikel, silver or even gold. We loved the ide of making coins. we iven made coin pres. And when finished presing them boom. I had 100 seperate coins. So the main thing that would alow coins to work is making then stokable. One pile of 1000 coins for example. Coins will work i guaranty. It'll work in bider states. But please make them stokable soon
And allso, it is not wise to make coins out of iron. Coins will have their value bigger then the material and work that was needed to make them. Try in real life to smelt some coins and get the same valua than it was worth befor smelting.

in modern society, the value of the coin is unrelated to the value of the metal.
Early systems used the value of the materials as the starting point and they evolved into our modern system, but I agree with what you are saying, states do not need to give their currency the same value as the materials they're made of, but it seems that it takes a lot to convince a Cantrian of the value of anything they can't directly use

Convincing is not a problem At least we do not have one. The real problem is separate coins. It is very useful when town do not have the exackt resours that others need, but in nearest future will have. So, thei trade in coins. Seller knows what he will be able to bye nex time he arrives. So it is very useful thing and we cant whait until it will be in one pile.
