One other point, you might not have noticed this if your only experience is with loaded, slow ships but using a fast one, i.e. a unloaded sloop, alone. The image under location tab gives the area around you, from your position to the rim of the picture shows about 4 ticks worth of travel, this could be a bit more i suppose to help the players. Four ticks last 12 hours so two log-ins needed per day or you'll just keep on moving (unless you set a max for the hours). Only things that really help are telescopes, binoculars, but these are tough to make.
I've seen many ships travelling cautiously, always hugging the coast, i suppose they have the same maps i do they must be scared to lose their way or cannot be sure to be logged in on a regular basis.
Another way to help sailors find land is generating messages at random (blame it on bad weather, thick clouds or so) but also at the point he is not far from land. It is something noticeable but not entirely clear to see for the sailor, a shift in color, a shadow or birds. A direction is shown, if it's land it will be generated again until it's in clear sight.

However, I'd still prefer that the element of helping those who are in large groups should come from the speed of putting up the sails and that a single person should be able to put up a sail and it works automatically. However, so long as you provide a boost for all sizes of groups.... alright
-nods- Oh, yes, I do agree. For example, a dinghy should be able to have a small and easy to manage sail.

I tend to think that anything that provides such a drastically useful boost shouldn't be unbalanced by equal input... I think sails would likely function like better per person oars, but with pre-set caps, so small sails have max 1, medium: 3, large:5 and be semi-automatic (as in it works too, so one person counts like two, and two like three) Probably have all speed boost work be pure strength based, skill wise.
