i discovered that a hammer and screwdriver can be used for a new project called 'silence alarm'


i discovered this new use at a quarter after 3 in the morning. i had a nice relaxing shower so i could sleep well before a job interview in the morning , shortly after i finished as i was looking at my chest and shoulders in the mirror to see if my recent working out has been showing yet and then the smoke alarm goes off from the humidity. i run to open the windows i try fanning the alarm i try putting a box over it then a blanket and the box and yes i tried pushing the silence alarm button many times even tried using a pen to make sure i was pushing far enough then i went and got the hammer *smash smash* (first smash as i was enraged and deaf at this time standing on a chair seeing red missed the alarm and hit the ceiling) then i got the fu(&#& down tore it open with the claw and stabbed the speaker with the screwdriver it was a phillips if it makes a difference.

For weeks my smoke alarm was going off at random times - mostly in the really early morning - but just for like 10-15 seconds at a time. Just long enough to wake me up and get me all jangled so I couldn't sleep! I finally got the maintenance man to look at it and as he opened it up a big, dead cockroach fell out (even though I've never seen one in my apartment - it must have come out of the ceiling). I guess it would move around and trip the alarm until it got fried.

After that the alarm wouldn't stop beeping so they had to put in a new one. This one came with a tiny shower cap that I can put on it which prevents it from going off, like if it's a hot day and I'm baking - because it's kind of near my oven. I've never had to use the shower cap but I might when summer comes.

Blaring smoke alarms are horrible!!! I would be scared to live without one, though. I'm kind of afraid of fire but there's a nice three-foot wide ledge outside my window that I can climb out on and run all the way around the building if I need to.

Hmm... and I thought cockroaches could survive radiation doses... (Smoke detectors have small Beta sources in them, smoke disrupts the beam, causing the alarm... Beta is a quite powerful form of radiation, but cannot penetrate the pastic of the alarm.)

Lol, Vik, did it not have batteries you could've just pulled out temporarily? I can just see you beating the hell out of that thing. I tend to d/c my battery while I cook or something, cuz mine is kind of sensitive too.

But removing batteries isn't nearly as satisfying... or fun to tell about on forums... Not that I'd ever beat the alarm in my room to death (as I'm in a dorm), but it could be pretty entertaining.

yep .. our one in the hall near the kitchen is on the mains ... and lets us know 1 minute before anything is finished cooking ... so whatever is being cooked ends up burning 'cos we are pressing the reset button

I work at Pizza Hut, recently promoted to Manager.
Went to the store at about 10am to open up the store, the stock guy was there (the stock guy is the one who delivers the flour, the ingredients, etcetera for pizzas) and I let him in, he offered to deactivate the alarm (there alarm has a 1-minute count down timer once you enter, you have to deactivate it quickly) and I said, nah don't worry I'll do it.

Anyway, I just HAD to have a mental blank right there, and I entered the wrong number twice, started panicking and bashing any number in.

The alarms started ringing, so I grabbed the store's mobile phone to call the Area Manager and get the code, and sprinted out of the store to get away from the sound.

SO! you can imagine what the guy doing the stock was thinking!!! LOL He just meets this somewhat new manager he's never seen before, the 'manager' fails to turn off the alarm, grabs the store's phone and makes a run for it!!

Anyway, I couldn't get through to the area manager but he deactivated the code.

I was very lucky because I had remembered the code wrongly anyway.

That's my Alarm story. Not really a smoke alarm, but still an alarm.

Heh, my brother and his friend were very drunk and thought their smoke detector looked hungry when it kept going off whilst they were trying to cook pasta. So they cooked some pasta, ripped it off the ceiling, and began feeding it pasta. When it was off the ceiling because it was his uni accomadation, it set off an alarm in the security place, so about five minutes later three security people burst into the room and found them feeding their smoke alarm pasta. It sounded pretty funny

Yea, they are called hard wired and in some areas they are code in new construction and some remodeling. Code when remodeling (new) reaches a ceartain percentage. Code may be different where someone lives.

Two fears I have. House catching fire and needles. Needles *shivers* Fire *wakes up sweating*.
No joke can not sleep because I have dreams of house on fire. Been having them since I was five and I am nearly thirty.
The strange part is that I love fire. I love to burn whatever is burable.

Fire good: you ever try to smoke a rack of ribs without fire? Not talking in game, but real life.
Fire bad: ever get blisters inside of your nostriles? Real life as well.
