Agreed Sicofonte. I dare not say it for I fear the wrath of the mods.

Four little letters. One little word and people are up in arms.

That word is part of my vocabulary and you should see the faces of the old when they hear me say it. I look at them, smile and say "sorry, but be me and be different". They only return my smile. I think that they understand and they are not smiling because I am some man of hunky love.

The words are just that.., words. The listener is the one that makes the words what they mean. Shame on them, not the ones that say the words.

OH, by the way, fuck has and is being listed in dictionaries.

I use that word around many people everyday. I use the word very frequently and no one piss moans or groans about it. Eventually it will be another word as any other.

I've worked as hard as I can and yet I'm in danger of losing my student benefits. It's not my fault that we're expected to study twice the speed I feel comfortable with.

Those bastards! How dare they dictate to you how fast to study. Don't they understand that too much studying without a bit of Cantr thrown in is a recipe for insanity?

No it won't, and the reason people say those words how they do is because of the meaning. People often use those words in an offensive way.

I don't use them and I don't replace them. (Although I have a small problem saying dang it..but hardly)

Luckly, Cantr have kind and understanding moderators.

That is very true. I get annoyed when a forum doesn't allow you to even have a picture in your sig if it has the website its from on it...

I've already decided to move back to my parents by the end of April, for the summer. They don't know about it yet... My mom would've wanted me to keep this apartment, but I don't know if I'll find work, and I couldn't afford to keep it with zero income. Maybe I'll get back in the fall, or then I'll get some other apartment.

Recently I just feel like falling apart. Every time I finish something, there's a couple of other things waiting to be done. Anything without a strict deadline will be delayed due to the things that do have a deadline.

So we will have to look for another one.

Clearly, from this quote you know that you weren't using, "just another word." You were using the most offensive one you knew.

In the past I have argued against the censorship of swear words because I thought it limited expression in the forums too much. Now, however, I'm going to argue against what you are saying, Sicofonte, because I feel that your purpose is deliberately to offend.

You simply cannot make an argument against the power of words as you have been trying to do. You know that words hold power and words that many people find offensive are intrinsically powerful. They are not just another word like 'picnic' or 'thread' or 'cup.' Their two purposes (that I can think of right now) are for emphasis and to offend.

I don't know what you wrote in your reply to Pie but from what I can gather you chose to use the most offensive words you could think of to criticize a young, Christian boy about his poor spelling. This did abosolutely nothing to make Pie look bad and everything to make you look immature and foolish.

I said fuck a lot, too, when I was a teenager. It makes us feel big or something...whatever. Now, I only use it very rarely for emphasis. If you are going for a power word, overuse is the worst (or best?) thing you can do to disempower it.

one of my charries happened upon the spawn town of my second one (now dead) by chance, and I thought I'd look around a bit. I was greatly saddened that my ex charrie was not mentioned on the list of passed away citizens. Though I am not surprised, as he was killed in a semi coup. Though the old leader (also killed in the coup) was mentioned :(

I loved that character

kinvoya wrote:Now, however, I'm going to argue against what you are saying, Sicofonte, because I feel that your purpose is deliberately to offend.

Or you didn't read me, or I didn't speak English.

Sicofonte wrote:You have a good day, you are happy, smiling to the world, and suddenly you hear someone saying "oh, I feel upset"... ok, it is not your matter, and you continue smiling in your happy day, and suddenly you hear someone saying "Oh, FUCK"... ah! he said FUCK! he offended me, now I am unhappy...

Is this so unintelligible?
:s

If I say "I'll spell it however I want! bloody hell!", is that "Bloody hell!" there intended to offend someone?

I don't know if when you say "bloody hell!" you are thinking "fuck you all!". But when I think "bloody hell!" I am just thinking "I am upset!", and my intention would be just to express that mood state. Nothing else. Never to offend no one!. When I hate someone, I tell him, frankly and clear (Isn't it, Wilmer?).

kinvoya wrote:You simply cannot make an argument against the power of words as you have been trying to do.

The power of words... In Spain the verb "coger" mean to take, to seize, to hold. In southamerica that word "coger" does mean "to have sex with".
The power of meanings!!!!! The power of IDEAS!!!!!!

You can't listen my words, think fast and believe that you read my thoughs.

Maybe you know the power of the word MISUNDERSTANDING.

kinvoya wrote:You know that words hold power and words that many people find offensive are intrinsically powerful. They are not just another word like 'picnic' or 'thread' or 'cup.'

Prejudices.
Again, in Spain "concha" (shell) is just a marine shell, something nice. But in southamerica it means "obscene word for the female genitals". If I say "qué concha más bonita" (what a wonderful shell) and you became offended (instead of indifferent, flattered or amused)... what can I do?

kinvoya wrote:Their two purposes (that I can think of right now) are for emphasis and to offend. I don't know what you wrote in your reply to Pie

It is sad to know that without reading me, you think I do want to offend Pie. I guess you think I am a depictable person, but your opinion can't come from a only post mine. What I have been doing that you think so bad of me?

kinvoya wrote:but from what I can gather you chose to use the most offensive words you could think of to criticize a young, Christian boy about his poor spelling. This did abosolutely nothing to make Pie look bad and everything to make you look immature and foolish.

I don't see why a Christian or a young should receive more respect than others (I know, you was not saying that, but anyways the refference to his religion and age is out of place).
Anyhow, I didn't criticize Pie. Never. I hate English spelling, I think it is the only language in the world that have no relation between its written and its spoken forms. The only one in the world that can give sense to the spelling competitions. I am sure that Pie is taking advantage of all the neurons he has saved learning ambiguos and annoying written words for more important subjects (like not becoming offended by nothing).

kinvoya wrote:I said fuck a lot, too, when I was a teenager. It makes us feel big or something...whatever.

Not to me. I just prefer to say "****!" instead of "oh, I am upset". "****!" is more expressive, and only offensive if the listener want to become offended. Even if I don't say any taboo word, that listener could become offended because my anger.

kinvoya wrote:Now, I only use it very rarely for emphasis.

Oh, so you actually understand me. You actually behave like me.

kinvoya wrote:If you are going for a power word

No, what has been said: I don't believe in words, I believe in ideas.

Nice to meet you, Kinvoya ;)

PS: do you know who edited my posts and why?... It was me, without any hesitation, because BlackCanyon told me that Pie could misunderstand what I wrote. I stand by all that I have said, but specially with the "it is sad that you think so bad of me".

I was disagreeing with your ideas about certain words. If you thought that it meant that I think badly of you then that is your idea, not my words. You have convinced me that my words cannot hold power, only your idea of what my words might mean.

Hmmm... -a bit confussed- ahhmmmm... -more confused- well, in a scale of 0 to 10?

But it depends on the situation.

In the quoted one, as I am interpreting that this YES is ironically intended to answer my question (so you still think I was insulting pie and all what I wrote was a pile of lies), it has a 8: your are telling me with a yes that I am depictable AND a lier AND an hipocrite, and this has some power against me (power to repel me out of here). But this power comes from the idea behind the word, :P

Better I leave this thread...
