Storage of liquids and gasses

Postby oddedd » Fri Jan 26, 2007 9:22 am

Ok I had a search and couldn't see this suggested though I must say I am surprised. However I have a feeling I'm going to get some hate mail for this, but the idea of cantr is to make things realistic, not to make them easy.

Ok, so oil gas etc. How is it we can just collect it and it's just magicly floating in our inventory!? I think that to collect liquids and gasses you must first be in possesion of a suitible container, for example for oil it could be a barrel, and for propane a gas canister. and maybe liquids and gasses are measured in litres instead? And your inventory would read something like

1300 grams of potatoes
a brand new bone spear
a brand new barrel (100 Litres of Oil, 50%full)

just a thought and I realise the implications of changing resources that require a container from grams to litres are huuuuge and probably not practible but the idea could work with grams too. It would just have to carry lets say 100 grams of oil or 200 grams of water and have it defined that way.

Also because you may have lots of containers, when you start a project to collect oil for example, you will need to select which container it goes into, also the facility to pour and transfer between containers.

This will also mean you can't just have it lying around on the floor, so outside have large lockable structures which allow you to pour or transfer the contents of a container into them, and also pour or transfer the contents back into a container. And in buildings and ship cabins you should be able to transfer huge unmovable tanks for these resources. this will open a whole new world to the customisation of ships and such as you may find a tankers roaming the seas and lakes.

Finally current road vehicles will be ok for transporting this resources that require containers as you can just load them with so many barrels, but a tanker would be interesting, working alot like a building in that to get the liquid or gas out you would have to transfer it either into barrels or an outside storage tank.
When you're falling off a cliff you might as well try to fly.

Cantr is designed to be -fun-, not realistic or easy. If we are making unnecassary difficulty that makes the game less fun just for the sake of realism, it will ruin the game (I mean.... ruin the game to an even further extent than the implementations they have done to try to do this in the past)

I think it's supposed to be a balance of fun and realistic. Realistic often takes away the fun and adds monotony or annoyance, though (at least the minute bits of reality). I mean, how many times do you want to make your char go crap when their bladder bar is full? And if you take away too much fun through causing people to have to micromanage their characters like they have to micromanage themselves in reality, then people will stop playing.. so you have to balance both.

Anyways, I think it's been suggested to need some things to hold liquids and stuff in, but I don't really think it matters all that much and really wouldn't want to see it. But whatever. It probably wouldn't be that big a deal, just a minor addition. And each minor addition adds up.

It already keeps becoming more and more of a chore to play, less left to enjoy, unless you just want chars running around with absolutely nothing to their name other than some food. Even the food has become a chore because now you have to watch closely to see if they're overeating if you don't want to waste food.

Storage pixies. Just pretend it is storage pixies.

But seriously it is just a part of Cantreality, in fact I find all those little oddities part of the charm of the game. :)

Oh and what the other two said as well.

I do, too. But people keep trying to stamp them all out. Like the cars and fuel... and other such things. As Spider said.. hopes and dreams, damnit! lol

You can build storage containers to carry your liquids if you really want them. One of my characters carries a medicine bag full of stew. ;)

Because of all the previous posts this would be the worst thing to do to Cantr.
The longer I play and the more things are changed the less I enjoy playing.

Really? I was thinking about this a few days ago. Personally, while I may not like all changes, Cantr has overall become more fun then when I started (not too sure when that was, though. Pre 1000's, perhaps around 800 or so).

I found this post quite funny. Needed that laugh...

Anyways, I always wanted this idea. But in view of other changes... I would rather just leave it the way it is.
