Molding keys

Postby deadboy » Tue Jan 23, 2007 10:35 pm

Ok, so here's a new suggestion that would make a theifs life slightly easier.

Right now, if you want to copy a key, the project remains on the floor, meaning that people see when you make the key. This makes subtely and secretly copying keys -very- difficult. Say... a town leader dies, you cannot pick up his keys, copy them, then hand them to a town official without being caught in the act.

So how about we implement "Key molding". Basically, this would be a quite cheap object, perhaps 50g of rubber and whatever the case is, perhaps 30g of iron. You can mold a key in it, and it retains the shape of that key. This is a completely personal, secret event. The key could then be passed on, and you could move to a locked, private space before copying your keys from the key mold. Once you have done so, you can wipe clean the mold. It's a little tricky to code, but what do you think?

Not entirely a new suggestion. Everything you mentioned has been covered in the thread linked below, but since it is an off topic suggestion, I will leave this thread.

No, completely against, every time a leader dies and drops the keys, the safety of the town is at risk because who ever picks the keys up first will mould them.

That can happen anyway, a character can just pick up the keys ;). This is just a more subtle, organised way of doing it, and for that reason it costs a little, but a little iron, so newspawns cannot do it

CLAY! It's an old trick, hold some fresh clay in your hand, when someone hands you a key, you press it against the clay and you will get the print (or nowadays they would use Play-Doh) and then you wait till it dries and fill it with metal. I think clay would make more sense than rubber.

... but Cantr system is a bit tricky, it shouldn't be a project, it should be an action that happens instantly. When you have a key or keys, it checks if you have enough clay in your inventory (50 grams or so) and if yes, a new button would be presented, one that says "make a mould of this key". It would minus 50 grams of clay from your inventory and give you an item "fresh mould for key #xxxxxxx". The use on a project button would create a project "drying a key mould", which would take one day. You could start it anywhere, which means you could walk around with the fresh mould but you couldn't use it. Once it has dried, you could use it to produce copies, and you could also choose to smash it.

Edit: Oh, and it could be done so that the fresh mould will deteriorate fast and crumple if it isn't set to dry within one Cantr day.

Well you might have to smooth some edges... But I think it would take less time to produce a key, after the mould is ready.

well this could be useful to make a master mould for a lock aswell, a cheap way of having a back up incase your keys get lost etc, and maybe even quicker then copying a key
When you're falling off a cliff you might as well try to fly.
